So I have 300 dollars and need tools to fit a 1911 together.
I know I need some books first, but after that I have only stories.
I'm a machinist by trade but I can't bring my hobby into work. So no mills or lathes for me. I have all the emery Paper I need and any kind of measuring tool I could use.
Is there any Tool kits or anything for starters. I plan on getting a frame with allot of options done already. Same as slide and semi drop in barrel.
Where should I start?
This is a very, very broad question. My advice is to do some research, and buy the AGI 1911 series, all 3 parts with your money. then you will be much better informed as to which tools you will need. Also, the better question is what are you going to do, re-build/improve a 1911, build one from a kit,are you going to fit frame to slide and hand lap, etc. common tools are sear stoning jigs, polishing stones, calipers, etc. But really depends what your specific plan is as to what tools you will need.
I'll have to check out the agi series. I heard of Jerry KUHNHAUSEN books. I figured start by modding my 1911 But I defenetly want to get a parts kit and make my own. I'm not ready to invest in a mill yet.

LMAO, I dont think it'll cost a "whole" Mill...but the most important part of every build. modification is the planning. this way you are completely informed, buy ONLY the parts/tools you need, and the project will be a fun experience rather than frustrating. I have modified 1911's for some years now, mine and my customers, it can be very rewarding and doesn't have to be expensive either. you just have to determine what you want to do, educate yourself on the options, and make an informed selection.

Get at least Kuhnhausen, Volume 1 before you buy anything.
I agree with both of them for the books and the AGI vidoes. I have all 3 sets of the AGI vidoes and they are awesome in my opinion. I have had them for about a year now and watch them a several times a month. Also the tools that AGI uses are from Brownells. But you will need more than $300. I use those vidoes to build my MEU(SOC) which Im in the process of doing now.
I'm working on building my own 1911 also. Click on the Brownells link above for the videos, tools, parts, etc. I'm starting with my old 1911 and two barreled slides, a Ithaca and a Colt .22 Conversion kit. Did get a very good deal on a NIB Double Star frame so working couple of combinations.
