Looking for good 9mm self defense ammo with lower recoil
Hi. I'm looking for advice on self defense ammo for my wife's gun (Glock 19). She's shot my Winchester RA9TA and finds it too snappy to control the gun properly. She's a small 5'0 person. The gun isn't that much use if she can't control followup shots.
Are there any acceptable choices that aren't +P, and/or have less recoil?
I do have her doing some weights to strengthen her arms, but that's slow going for sure.
RA9T should tame it down for her.
Try any of the standard pressure subsonic 147 grain loads from the
Best Choices for Self Defense Ammo list
Winchester Bonded 147gr JHP (RA9B/Q4364)
Federal HST 147gr JHP (P9HST2)
Speer Gold Dot 147gr JHP (53619)
Remington Golden Saber 147gr JHP (GS9MMC)
Im a fan on the Hornady TAP FTP 124gr. Carry it in all my 9mm.
Glock 19s can be tamed by practicing dry firing with a spent casing balanced on the front of the slide. You need to take the slack out of the first stage of the trigger, aim and fire without dropping the casing. Get this whole process into muscle memory and your marksmanship will improve at the range. It may seem counter intuitive but a heavier grain bullet has less recoil so try a 147gr JHP.
I am switching from the HST 147 to the RA9TA in my M&P. Recoil is noticeably stronger with the +P+ ammo. Try some 147s and see if it works better for her.
Excellent. Thank you guys.
If you haven't already, you could also look at doing something to improve the grips. My wife and I both have small 9s and I put Hogue grip bands on them. It made a world of difference.
Take a look at standard pressure 124 gr Speer Gold Dots also.

Hornady Critical Defense
It may have more to do with her grip and stance than the ammo.
You may want to get her a copy of Magpul's "Art of the Dynamic Pistol" (DVD or Blu-Ray) and work through that with her.

Does she have manicured nails? My sister can't grip a pistol well because of her nails. No ammo choice is going to fix something like that.

No, no long nails or anything.
My vote is for RA9B or Gold Dots in 147 (147 Gold Dots are what the missus has in her primary handgun, and she finds 'em easy to shoot.)

Yeah, I use these with a PM9 and the recoil isn't too bad. It's less with a bigger gun like the G19.
Another vote for the standard pressure 124 Gold Dots
In my experience the 147 grain offerings consistently have more recoil than the 124 grain ones do. If that's her concern, I'd go with something at or near 124 designed for self defense like the standard pressure gold dot or critical defense.

I agree if we are comparing standard pressure loads

I second this suggestion. my wife is small and has really small hands. She can't shoot any glock worth a darn but shoots a full size .45 1911with aluminum frame just fine. Try out a gun with a single stack mag and a light short trigger pull and you might be surprised how well she shoots. My wife's favorite guns are a 1911 in 9mm or a browning hi-power with extra small grips and trigger job.
Why do people insist on getting small guns for women? Get her a G17, 124gr HSTs, and call it good.
