Gold dot or XTP?
I have a Hi Power clone (FEG) in 9mm that I want to use standard pressure ammo in. I am trying to decide between Speer Gold dot in the 147 grain loading or Hornady's XTP, also in 147 grain. What I have been able to find on the internet they both look good with perhaps the Speer Gold dot being a little better. Thanks for any suggestions.
As for the other 9mms I own I use Speer Gold dot +P in the 124 grain loading.
Gold Dots are for shooting people, XTPs are for hunting.
The Gold Dot load will meet all of the FBI test criteria, the XTP will not pass the 4-layer denim test.

It depends on what you want to use it for. For self defense, the Gold Dot. For target practice, the Hornady XTP is extremely accurate. The XTP tends to over penetrate for self defense applications. I load a .40M&P with XTP's for hikes in the woods because boar are the biggest threat in my area and the penetration is desirable. For two legged threats the Gold Dots win.
Thanks guys. I appreciate the responses. I think I will go with the Gold Dots but pick up some of the XTPs for when I go hiking.
Here in SWFL I would just go Gold Dot 124 or 147
Seems that the 124Gold Dot expands better

Would you be shooting at Denim Dan or something?

Funny how we rationalize things. Use Gold Dots if you need to shoot someone through a car windshield wearing 4 layers of denim. But if out hiking and get charged by a boar, who I assume is not driving a vehicle or dressed in denim, trust the XTP? Strange.
The other thing with regards to handgun ammo is that if you ever do shoot someone through a windshield, it's going to be mighty, mighty hard to justify that.
Cops need the ability to shoot through things, as they do have to shoot people in cars. They have a mid-range role between a solider (who's told to actively hunt and kill) and us civilians, who can only use deadly force in a self-defense scenario.
It's possible you could be in a shootout with a bad guy as a civilian, and they duck behind something like a windshield, and you still need to shoot them, but it's so low on the probability scale I favor what the bullet does on impact in the target than obstacle penetration.

With wildlife, penetration is more desirable than expansion, so yes, the XTP is superior for that application. The XTP bullet is used quite a bit for handgun hunting applications.

Strange.
Not really ...
The XTP is known to be a "hard" bullet. It will likely penetrate more, and at the same time, is not as likely to expand as consistently or as well as the GD bullet.

Road rage happens along with jacking
I shoot XTP's in my 10mm, they hold together and expand well at the higher velocities compared to the .40sw. I would stick with Gold Dots in standard pressure / low velocity loads.
