Best defense round for a 44 Magnum ?
I have a SW 629 with a 7.5" barrel. I am looking for a hunting/defense round that is a good performer.
The only round I have at the moment is Hydrashok
XTP's on top of LIl Gun powder for hunting.
It's a 44mag....anything will do nicely as a defense round.

I came here to say the same thing

DocGKR did a write up on this subject in his forum on M4carbine.
Hunting and defense are two seperate issues for the .44. For hunting, you'll want something with enough penetration to go through a tough hide, and for work at hunting ranges of 25 yards plus.
Defensive use with a .44 mag is often beset with too much penetetration. Fromd my understanding of ballistics, since you don't have the 2000+ FPS velocity or 2000 ft-lbs of muzle energy as with a rifle, you can't overcome poor bullet performance with power. So the bullet, even from a 44 mag, has to work for you.
I'd either use .44 Speical rounds, which will seem like a pussycat from a full size 44, or rounds that have less penetration than full power hunting rounds. Maybe 180 grainers.
Speer 200 Grain Gold Dots. Load them to somewhere around 1000 fps. (i.e. tame for .44 mag, but a bit over .44 special)
It's a bonded bullet so you really don;t have to worry about overdriving it unless you get really excessive.
Check out the ammo fact thread.
The Barnes all copper 44 mag rounds expand very nicely.

Is there a mfg that uses that bullet in their loaded ammunition?
XTP's are fine for hunting, not so much for SD. 44 mag loads to consider would be DPX in either mag or special, 210 silvertip, 180 gr JHP's. 240's are too much bullet for a human being.
I don't rely on my long barreled 629 for CCW, but I would choose .44 special. Big fat hunk of lead at .45 acp velocity that you can stack right on top of each other all day long at 50 yards. Recoil is about like a .22 pistol.

I use the CCI Blazer 44 Specials, they have the 200 grain gold dot hollow point bullet. Roughly equivalent to a .45 ACP.

Alrighty. I ordered a couple boxes of the 300 grainers.
I like the Speer 200 grain Gold Dot Short Barrel load.
about any 44 magnum load will have enough penetration.
I would use full power loads for hunting deer/bear
But would use down loads for SD like the 44spl Gold Dot etc!
Remington used to sell what they called a .44 magnum Medium Load. It had a 240 grain lead semi-wadcutter at about 1000 fps muzzle velocity. It's what I carried in my M29 and in 3 of the 4 speed loaders in pouches on my duty belt.
I'm a fan of the old Remington 240gr. Semi-Jacketed Hollow Point load, R44MG3.
