PT709 Slim broke after 161 rounds!!!

Well, the sun came out today and warmed up nicely, so I decided to go to the outdoor range and I'm the only person there. I'm shooting my nearly brand new Taurus PT709 Slim and, just when I finally think I have the flimsy, adjustable rear sight set after about 30 rounds, I shoot and the trigger does not reset. I pull the slide back, eject a round and feed another. Another shot fired and, again, the trigger doesn't reset. I push the magazine release and the magazine doesn't drop free. WTF? So I pull the magazine out and notice that it's kind of tight in there. I open the slide, another round pops out and I look inside to see... a big CRACK just below and to the right of the feed ramp!!! I'm pissed, so I dump a 25 round mag through the Ruger 10/22 as fast as I can and go home.

I don't know the names of all the parts inside of guns but, from looking at the manual that came with the 709, I think the crack is in the Central Support. This really sucks because I wanted this pistol to be a nice subcompact CCW. Now I guess I have to deal with the dreaded Taurus customer service. Any tips on how I should handle this? I have never had any serious problems with a firearm and have never utilized any type of warranty service. I will post pics as soon as I figure out how to.

How bad does Taurus really suck? I have about 300 rounds through my aluminum frame PT1911 no problems whatsoever. Should I expect it to fall apart soon also?

1. Send it to Taurus and have them fix it.

2. Sell it.

3. Get a different pistol.

Yeah, my confidence in Taurus has gone pretty much to zero now. I'm wondering if I should sell my PT1911 just to be on the safe side. All 161 rounds fired through the 709 were factory loads - mostly Federal 115grn. FMJ, some Fiochi 124 FMJ, some Remington UMC hollowpoint. None of the ammo was +P.

The only Taurus I had that I liked and trusted was a PT99. I wouldn't buy any new one as I think their quality has slipped a lot in the past 5 years.

don't do it. unless you realllly want to get rid of it..
I have about 500+ rounds thru mine and wouldn't hesitate to grab it if the need arises. good friend of mine got one right after me and has shot all kinds of stuff thru it including some "hot" reloads his is still working too..
as for their customer service I have no personal experience with them, but hopefully they will treat you right.

I really wanted to buy a 709 Slim for my wife for her CCW. She felt really comfortable with that new Ruger SR9c and I kept trying to nudge her back to the Taurus. She got what she wanted (she always does) and we walked out the door with a new Ruger. After reading this thread maybe its a good idea that we didn't get the 709.

Keep posting your customer support saga. I'm really interested in how Taurus stands behind their product and how they treat you.

I have about 200 rounds trough my 709 slim. Besides shooting about two inches low at 9 yards, it has been working fine. It never jammed. However I read a lot of complains about the gun over the internet.. which is sad because it is such a nice gun to carry. I wish it was made by Glock instead of Taurus...

I have had good luck with my PT709. It's the only Taurus I own. I think it's hit and miss with this model, some people love them and others hate them. I must have got lucky with the one I have. Other than shooting about 4 inches low at 7 yards I can't really complain. It handles any ammo I feed it even the +p and I have about 500 rounds through it now. Sorry to hear about your problem, I know of one member who sent his back and they gave him a 6 week turn around time.

No need to get rid of the PT1911, Well over 5k (stopped counting) through mine without an issue.

Bought my 709 on saturday and put 250 rounds though it today without a hickup. Besides the aforementioned propensity to shoot low, it worked like a dream. Real nice trigger reset for rapid fire. I love mine.

This...
The only Taurus I had that I liked and trusted was a PT99.

My PT99 gave me a couple of issues (FTE, rear sight broke off at 2k rounds or so).

Sent it in, got it back in 6/7 weeks after they 'misplaced' it.

Worked even better when I got it back and still shooting it.

YMMV.

I have a PT99 I bought new 24 years ago, but I can't find a replacement rear sight for it.

My rear sight is broken as well, it is common. I think Taurus just wants to sell me a new sight for about $40.00. I wish I had bought the 92...heck, it was my first handgun, and I didn't know any better.

Bound to happen with a brand-new, unproven design, offered by one of the worst major firearms manufacturers on the globe.

And yes, I say this as a happy and satisfied owner of a Taurus revolver.

I've heard that originally they made Beretta clones and did a pretty good job (back in the 1980's),
but lost the contract when their quality control went south. I wouldn't trust any of their new,
self-designed guns, but I know a few people who have had clones like the PT92 and said they
were fine.

What he said.

I had a PT709 and loved the size and weight but had problems with it from the beginning. Got so bad it would fail to extract every....single....time. Sent it to Taurus and it took about two months to get it back; they had to order a new extractor from Brazil. Very little communication or updates during this time and then one day it shows back up on my doorstep.

Got it back and it extracts fine but I found I just had too many issues with it (e.g., didn't like the trigger, rear "adjustable" sight didn't adjust enough) and I sold it. I'm now just carrying my Glock 19.

I think the 709 slim is an excelent idea, but poorly executed. Mine has been working well so far (300 rounds or so), and I consider my self lucky. If Taurus put more effort on quality control, the 709 would be a big hit in sales.

Have Taurus fix/replace it. (There will be some frustration!) If you are not satisfied with that, sell it or trade it towards something else.
85%+ of the Taurus fireams spectrum is reliable. Figure out which models are not reliable and you can get a 99.5% reliable gun.
I chuckled at the idea of a Taurus 1911 when it came out. After helping my buddy put 5,000+ rounds through it, (using Wilson mags), I stand corrected after having seen zero failures.

I have 2 PT709's and have had no problems whatsoever. I have about 200 to 300 rounds through each one, I love the way they carry, and am getting very accurate with shooting them. This makes me a little uneasy, but I guess until I have problems I will keep carrying them.

Yes send it to them to get it fixed unless you want to take a serious hit for the trade in. I dont know about you but i know a lot of places that dont take guns that do not fire.
