I have a Colt WWI reproduction (black army) pistol that i've had for over a year. The pistol is beautiful and deadly accurate... but the original sights suck LOL. I've been thinking about replacing the old army sytle sights with something newer and easier to see and acquire but I'm usure.

Should I do it or leave it original......decisions, decisions.

Well, you asked...so...ABSOLUTELY NOT. It is what it is. Leave it alone.

Your 1911 replica is just that: a replica of an early Colt 1911 pistol.
This is no different than buying a replica of a Colt Dragoon revolver and not liking the sights. You bought a replica for what it is, and replacing sights or other parts will destroy it's uniqueness.

If you want better sights and all the modern convenient options, you probably ought to sell the 1911 and buy a different gun.
Any alterations will ruin it's authenticity and lower the value.

Original sight are inexpensive to buy and replace again if for originally sake you ever feel the need, providing your not machining the slide for their replacement. The pistol itself isn't anything special to anyone resale wise. Damn assholes won't give you top dollar no matter what you do or don't do to it. Screw them, do what you want. .02

It's your pistol and obviously you can do as you want. You bought it to use or you wouldn't be asking about the sights. It's refreshing actually and I would look at it this way. If you alter the pistol to the point it cant be changed back to original configuration then you are doing serious damage to your investment. That may or may not have an impact on your decision? I would shoot it as is since it is performing as it was designed. The pistol wasn't designed to be a target pistol, Colt already makes one for that. The shooter in me says go shoot it for what it is and enjoy it just like it was designed. If you want a target Colt get a 70 series and modify or get a Gold cup and shoot targets. My humble opinion since you asked.

Torment- replacing the small staked in front sights is a real pain and does not lead itself to recurrent swaps. I'd say leave them be. with a lot of people looking for the scarce reproductions and more of the "modern" 1911's around I think you could trade off the reproduction for a real good price to get what you want. to butcher it up seems wrong to me

As you mentioned, "deadly accurate" and it was purchased as a Colt repro 1911, I'd leave it alone.
When I see even an original older Colt with those huge Millet sights installed for example, I cringe.

Pain yes, but what the hell, it can be done without damage. I've had it done more than once on a few of mine now. To each their own, but I say replace if he's not happy.
