I am getting all the supplies to reload for my .50 AE. Anyone have any advice for this caliber. I have been reloading for many years, so I'm not new to the game but am having a hard time getting all of the supplies to reload the 50.

Does anyone have a load they already worked up and works great in the 50??

Thanks guys.

Been loading for it since 2008 and the biggest thing with this round is make sure you put a substantial taper crimp when you're finished otherwise you might run into feeding problems. The load that I use the most for practicing is using a Ranier 300gr HP over 29.5gr W296 using a CCI 350 large magnum pistol primer. Brass so far has all been Speer 1x fired. Out of my 6" barrel, I've been seeing velocities in the upper 1300fps range with reasonably good accuracy.

I had a little trouble, at first, because my load data said "large pistol primer" and didn't mention the word magnum. Obviously, everything I made was squibs (but enough oomph to get out of the barrel). Magnum pistol primers are required. Winchester's large pistol primers *are* magnum pistol primers, though.

Magnum primers have more to do with the type of powder being used than the case they are in. H110 / Win 296 is one of those that prefers mag primers.

Just curious, does brass in the .50 get beat up as badly as in the smaller calibers? The .357 seems especially bad. Here are some dummy rounds that I chambered 10 times each to check for set-back. The bullets stayed in place, but you can see the case mouths and rims are getting pretty beat up. Not a big deal on .357, as that is pretty easy to come by. It might be a little more of concern with the more expensive .50 brass. The rim at least should be better, as it is a smaller diameter than the rest of the case, so it should be somewhat protected.

My .357 doesn't beat up the brass like that, interesting.

A friend loads for his .50, and he has a .44 bbl for it as well. His experience and mine say you definitely need thick jacketed bullets. The plated stuff won't cut it, and you'll get severe leading if you try. Also, they prefer full power Magnum loads, H110 is a great powder for them. My friend experimented with lighter bullets and super light charges, he had his .50 cycling so slowly it was almost comical. (Rounds weren't that accurate though)

Wow, I've never noticed damage to my brass like that before. The only dents I've had were a result of the early days when I was having trouble controlling the pistol and the bolt would ride over the cartridge as it was chambering a round.
