Hello all. I really miss my 3" S&W K Frame revovler and I have wanted to try a Ruger Gp or SP. Is either model about the same size? Sorry to be so vagie, if anyone has owned both and can give me a side by side review, I would appreciate it.
Thanks

The GP100 is quite a bit heavier than the SP101 line

The Ruger website is pretty good as far as charts showing weights and dimensions.

I like the Rugers, good value and pretty good resale and of course they are very strong and solid .

Thing is I don't believe the triggers are near as good as the S&W guns. Yeah I know everybody says that if you replace some springs and/or
have a gunsmith work them over they can be real nice . This is true but if you do the same stuff with a S&W you get something that is better yet

I feel the whole thing about a revolver and the way it shoots is really about the trigger . If you once had a K frame S&W I don't guess you will be 100% satisfied with the Ruger.

I don't get as excited about the trigger lock on the newer S&W stuff as some do , doesn't seem to make any difference to me,
Lots of good used S&W gun out there

SP is going to be close for weight with smith sp = 5 shot gp= 6 shot size isn't that much of a factor difference in my opinion in the three 4" versus 3"

The GP is bigger than a K frame, very similar in size to the L frame. The SP will be smaller than the K. Both will be fairly heavy.

My 2 3/4" .357 MAG SP101 weighs 1lb, 11 7/8oz, loaded with five 125gr Speer Gold Dots.

The GP100 3" is similar in size to the K frame 3". I don't know if the Ruger will fit in the same holster, but haven't ever tried. Holsters for the three inch barrels aren't easy to find. The K frame pictured is a 38 special version, so the cylinder will be longer in the model 65 (.357 magnum).

The GP100 3" weighs almost 35 oz. unloaded with the older 1990's, early 2000's smaller grip. I think the new ones have that overly large Hogue used on the 4" and 6" models.

The K Frame 3" (model 64 in 38 spl. pictured, model 65 in .357 mag. probably weighs a bit more), weighs about 33 oz. unloaded with standard recent production Butler Creek three finger groove grips.

The GP100 3" has a pinned in sight, but the pin is extremely small. If anyone knows of any aftermarket sights, tritium, light tube, red/white stripe, brass bead or whatever, that are fit for the Ruger I'd like to know about them.
Such a shame that S&W didn't offer theirs with a pinned front sight or common dovetail, as they had to machine all of the material away to make the integrated front sight anyway. Interchangeable front sights with different heights especially, would have made matching the load used, to the gun, much easier.

If no one does it before then, I'll see about taking some pics of my 4" GP and 2 1/4" SP this weekend.

Basically, the GP is roughly equivalent to the S&W L frame, the M686. It is a little bulkier than the 686, but very similar for size and weight. It would be a little bigger and heavier than the K frame, the models 19, 66, and too many fixed sight guns to mention. The GP uses the same speed loaders as the 686. Unless the holster is very tightly molded, holsters for the GP and 686 with the same barrel sizes should be interchangeable.

The SP would be similar to the S&W J frame, the 5 shot snubbie revolvers. Like the bigger guns, it would be a little bigger and a little bulkier, but very similar in size. Like the bigger guns, the SP uses the same speed loaders that the J frame uses. Also like the bigger guns, unless the holster is very tightly molded, the SP should be able to use the same holsters as a J frame of the same barrel length.

Yes I have the 3inch and 6 inch GP100 older models
Both heavy rugged and very accurate

The K frame S&W is just above it. more refined.

GP 3inch made for a good belly gun
with 38+P loads it would tame recoil
and made for fast shooting with tight groups

Find an old Security Six, that'll be closer. I love my GP-100 but it's pretty bulky. The SP is smaller but similar in weight.
