That is a pre model 15. Back then it was known as the Combat Masterpiece.
S&W started making this model in 1949, and deleted the upper sideplate screw in 1955. So yours was made in that range.
EDIT in RED
Thank you. I looked on the inside of the frame and could find no markings of any kind other than the serial number.

This is correct. You have a fine old revolver. Cherish it for what it is, an example of American crafstmanship that will never be repeated and a thing of joy to shoot.

On S&Ws, the official, ATF-legal serial number is on the bottom of the butt; you'll have to remove the grips to see it. The gun is old enough that you might find it on some of the parts; bottom side of the barrel when the cylinder is open, the back side of the cylinder, the bottom of the ejector star, and if you look through the chambers, it should be on the crane also.
The number visible with the cylinder open is an assembly number used to keep fitted parts together at the factory; it has no relevance to collectors.
Your gun looks like it's in good shape, and it should be a great shooter.

Sorry but I am not much of a pistol guy so I don't know how to tell the difference.

You done good.
I took the grips off and the serial number is K 119895.
