I am buying a Springfield high capacity 1911 with the non-beavertail safety. Does anyone know if a regular beavertail safety will fit on this model? I haven't tried it yet but I like the look of a beavertail safety if I can put one on. I am getting it for a great price so I am willing to put a little money into it. $400 with Heinie night sights and 4 magazines. Very low round count (one box of ammo).

Thanks.

I called Springfield Armory and they told me this can be done but being a mil spec model there is a little more work involved. I was given a rough estimate ( I didn't need an exact estimate at this time ) of $145 + $15 shipping to do it. If I decide to go forward with a beavertail safety I will let my friend who lives for the 1911 and does work on them (amature gunsmith) look at it first.

Springfield is probably quoting for radiusing the frame tangs, fitting the safety, and refinishing. Sounds like a fair price to me.

If you buddy's never fit a bevertail before, I wouldn't let him proactice on a gun you like a whole lot. Been there, done that.

just about every part on the double stacks use single stack parts.

trigger, grips (and hardware), magazines, magazine release, and magazine funnel will be different. Just about every other part is std 1911 single stack.

frame tangs will have to be adjusted. KNow what I don't know is if it matters if you need a .220 rad or if a stds .250 will work. I don't see it mattering as the rad needs to be cut in the frame.

Para double stack parts work for the springer.

Thanks guy for the replies. Actually my friend is quite good with 1911s. We went to lunch today and he showed me his latest work where he put a beavertail on a Commander size .45 and a magwell. He showed me where he had to cut back either the frame or beavertail to get it all to work. If they use single stack parts I'll just let him do it. He is cheap. You bring him parts and the gun (we work together at the FD) and then take him to lunch at Sonny's or the like for his time.

Edit: Springfield mentioned it would need raidus work and then a refinish to make it all match.
