Help me pick a new nightstand gun
molar  [Member]

Right now, I'm using a Glock 22 with night sights as my main HD gun. It is a Gen 2 so I can't mount a weaponlight. I'd like something railed, caliber either 9mm or 45.

I'm looking at the HK45, M&P 45, and Sig P226 in 9mm. Any other contenders I should look at?

My nightstand gun is an XD-40 with a TLR-1. Good gun with plenty of rounds downrange, it helps me sleep better at night

Why not a G21?

Bad experience with a recent Gen 3 19 and it doesn't feel as well in my hand as the other polymer 45's.

WINNER

Love my SP-01 Tactical, amazing ergonomics, nice heft, 18 rounds of 9mm, steel frame for less recoil, and standard rail for lights. Once I get the cash, I will be throwing an X-300 on mine.

My nightstand gun rotates between my FNX-9, HK 45(in spite of it's crappy trigger), and my CZ-75B.

Most of the time it's the FN though.

The 9mms are loaded with 147gr. HST, and the HK has 230gr. +P HST (I would rather have had standard pressure, but it's all I could find at the time).
The CZ 75 is sporting Mec-Gar 19 round mags.

How is the FN' s trigger? I've considered the FNP 45. I've already 6 or so hi cap mags for the P226, so I might look for a used railed version.

Does anyone have experience with the CZ 97. The decocker version looks interesting.

The Trigger on my FN is one of the main reasons I use it so much.

If my HK 45 had an FN trigger on it, it would be my "go to" home defense pistol, no contest.

Does your HK have the LEM trigger or the standard DA/SA?

These gentlemen have the correct answer. I bought a P226 for that role, but that was only because I felt I needed one in my collection.

If I could only own one brand of pistols to cover any application, my answer would be CZ, no hesitation. For this job, the SP-01 is the obvious pick.

Standard DA/SA, never understood the desire to have a DAO "revolver" trigger in an autoloader.

It's also the same manual of arms as my FNs and CZ, so that makes transition between them a no brainer.

Get a G34. Problem solved. Not the sexiest solution, but the most practical.

Right now mines my STI Elektra in 45 acp and a separate Surefire light but soon as i get a chance it will go back to being a Glock 21 45 acp with night sights and a weapon light/laser.

If you go Sig p226 I would get the Navy model because the internals parts are protected

My S&W 642 Jframe has a decent DAO pull

I could live with the same action in a Pistol

LEM isn't all that revolver like. It's closer to an offspring of a revolver and a SAO trigger. The mainspring is compressed already, so the pull is relatively light. Reset is NOT full length like a DA revolver. The break is similar to a revolver in that you don't have a hard "wall" of weight followed immediately by a break, the trigger smoothly rolls through the break.

I find it to be a very intuitive for hitting small targets at speed. My splits are a few hundredths slower than a glock or M&P, but I'll gladly give that up for better accuracy at speed.

Your main HD gun should be a rifle or shotgun.

For a SECONDARY home defense gun, if the G22 works well for you, then get a police trade in 3rd gen G22. No reason to switch up calibers or weapon systems.

I have Glocks, M&P's, Sigs, STI's, CZ's, XD's, Colt's and Ruger's, and have used them all at one time or another as a nightstand weapon. As of late the FN FNS9 with 18 rounds of Winchester SXT Ranger +p+ 127gr ammo and Surefire X300 weapons light is what's laying next to me when things go 'bump" in the night. I have 13 different personally owened Glocks, carry one on duty and still love em but I chose the FN FNS9 as it fits me better. A CZ SP01 Phantom or Glock 17 both in 9MM would be a great choices as well in my opinion.

IMO, you're GTG with your Glock 22, so why change?

If you feel you need to make a switch, I'd go with an HK 45 or any HK product for that matter. Good luck.

Rifle or shotgun is not an option for me as I have 2 small children in the house.

I can't add a weaponlight to my G22.

I like the HK with the LEM trigger, but it has an awfully high bore axis. I'm leaning towards the M&P 45.

Handguns need to be secured just the same as rifles or shotguns. I presume you keep your pistol locked up when you aren't carrying it. I have an 18 month old daughter. My primary home defense tool is a suppressed 11.5" AR. When I'm not home, it's locked up. When I'm home but my daughter is awake, the safe is latched but not locked and we don't leave her alone anyway. When she goes to sleep I get the rifle out and put it by my nightstand. In any case, my daughter is prevented access by my bedroom door, the door on the safe, and GOOD PARENTING. You can buy a locker and a shotgun for less than you would spend on a used handgun.

Handguns are poor tools for defense. The absolute ONLY thing they are good at is being small and convenient to carry. You are already familiar with your G22. It's a fine gun for personal defense. keep it.

If you insist on using a handgun for HD, buy a police trade in G22 3rd gen. You'll be able to use factory 22 round magazines and you're already familiar with the trigger and geometry of that gun.

Unless you just want an excuse to buy a new toy. In that case, go nuts; it's your money. Just don't delude yourself into thinking the choice to buy a new gun is logically necessary.

Based on your given options, the M&P 45 and an X300

But I do suggest that you revisit the Glock 21 option.

I have a Fort Knox handgun safe beside the bed. I have not found a way to secure a long gun that provides as fast access as the Fort Knox.

There are A LOT of long gun lockers and safes with programmable keypads or biometric fingerprint scanners. Even just a Stackon locker is pretty fast if you only lock one of the locks and keep the key handy. Your bedroom door does nothing to stop a thief but should be plenty to keep kids out. Ditto for a glass gun cabinet.

There are countless options that would allow you to keep a rifle or shotgun at the ready but safe from kids. If you'd prefer not to do that, it's your business. I do recommend that you keep that pistol on your person while you're wearing pants, though.

I recently bought a new bedside/house gun.

Like you, I need a mounted light.

I want to keep the gun with a round chambered. Administrative actions such as chambering a round while deploying the gun is not a sound practice IMO.

I want the gun to be in a safe condition on the table. ie: a manual safety engaged or a traditional double action pull (opinions on this will vary).

I do not want to rely on a holster to make the gun safe.

I DO NOT feel comfortable leaving a Glock, XD, M&P, etc out of a holster with a round chambered.

I think the best guns for this role would be a Sig, H&K, CZ or Beretta. They all make a selection of pistols with those features and are tops compared to any handguns.

I ended up going with a Sig MK25. Couldn't be happier, it stays loaded with Federal HST 147+p and has digested 1,660 rounds without a hiccup so far.

CZ Shadow is a great choice or an XD. As an XD owner I am a bit biased, but after 2000 rounds and no single hick up, I have to suggest it to anyone looking for a reliable gun.

I would vote Glock 21SF or Gen4 21 but you have already ruled that out.

Since that is not an option I would look at a Beretta M9A1 or Gen3 G17

I had a M&P and sold it... Great ergo's but the trigger sucked, felt like a mushy steamed carrot bending before it broke
