Any reason my extractor pin would have literally just fallen out? *KAHR P40*

Literally one day while handling this gun which I NEVER shoot, I have probably shot once in it's lifetime with me... I heard something fall to the ground.

This is what I found. What's going on?

That's imposible unless the rear plate or the extractor are gone.

That pin rests up against the extractor with a spring between it and the next pin that butts against the rear retention plate.

What you have there is part #25 on the diagram below

Interesting.

So, how is the extractor pin, outside of the gun, if I've never taken apart the gun? In any case, what does it take to get it back in place, as I'm sure this gun isn't functional until then

Thanks for the reply

Field strip the gun.

Then,on the right side of the back plate (item #4) there is a small half moon notch.
You need to get a small pin and depress what's inside (item 27) and slide the rear plate down and off.
Be aware that the half moon isn't fully open to the pin, part of it is a shelf on the plate that will block larger pins put into the opening, you need something small, like paperclip thin, to depress #27.

The plate also hangs up on the striker spring guide coming down and you may need to tension the striker spring in the process.

Once the plate is off, the 25,26 & 27 parts can drop out of the reciever.
Also, once that group is gone, the extractor itself can be rotated out if you wish to clean it.

I find small flathead screwdrivers, hemostats and a nice cocktail greatly aid in the process.

Good luck.

Thank you so much for the reply. I tried to do what you said, but I think something is fatally wrong.

When I inserted a pin to try and depress the rear plate, there was literally no resistance met. So I tried to slide the plate off, and it came right off. Here are pictures of what the slide looks like now.

Am I right in assuming something serious is missing from this gun? In other words, there were no #26 nor #27

Thanks again

Apparently, something went wrong and the extractor either broke or somehow popped out, losing the extractor, the extractor spring and the rear plunger.

If you feel competent to reassemble the slide properly, order a new extractor, spring, and rear plunger.
The bevel on the front of the plunger you still have fits over the extractor to retain it.
Note that reassembly with the extractor and spring assembly in place isn't easy due to strong spring tension and the spring tension of the striker assembly.
One way to do it is to assemble the striker and end plate, then install the rear ejector plunger, the ejector spring, the front plunger, then pull the front plunger to the rear with a small screwdriver with rounded off edges and corners while you slip the ejector back and down into position.
You have to use a screwdriver with rounded off edges and corners and be VERY careful, because if you slip you'll gouge the slide.
Remember, the bevel on the font plunger faces toward the slide and on top of the extractor

If the gun is still under warranty, you could just send it in to Kahr and let them check it out and replace everything.
While they have it, they'll inspect things to insure there's no problem that could have caused the ejector to come out.
Probably, all you'd need to send is the slide.

Thanks a ton for the reply.

I ordered a new extractor, extractor pin front/back, extractor spring.

I'm going to attempt to fix it myself.

Thanks again
