Sell me on a GI Expert....
I am fairly new to the 1911 world, but am thinking of buying a GI Expert. It is $530 at a local FFL.
So, are they good guns? I have not heard much about Para, much less this model.
I am considering a Springfield and this Para BTW.
Personally, I think the GI Expert is an excellent weapon at an excellent price...I keep considering one myself...just don't NEED another .45.
You could easily spend a lot more and not get a lot more...which was the idea behind the Expert anyway.
As of this post, the "Colt" forum has over 1000 topics, "Kimber" has 1,700+, and "Springfield Armory" has over 3,000 topics. While SA does have the XD, which undoubtedly waters down that post number, every one of these manufacturers are targeting the same consumer base as Para. And despite the fact that Para manufactures the Widebody 1911 variants, the LDAs, and a host of platforms in all shapes, sizes, and thicknesses, the Para topic count is under 500. Paras are less popular on the boards than the "other" forum. Paras are less popular by topic than the Desert Eagle forum, a manufacturer that has gained widespread acceptance as a fun but useless toy. For Para's affordable/semi-affordable price range, that should be telling.
People who are exceptionally cheap want an exceptionally cheap, no-frills pistol get a Phillipenes-based 1911 copy. People who have more money and better taste usually put their money into Colt, Kimber, SA, and STI if they aren't going semi-custom. Paras have had a history of using cheaper manufacturing materials/processes and they have had problems with fit, finish, and reliability. Their customer service has plummeted from what it used to be, and their resale is often terrible. That doesn't mean one can't get a perfectly adequate Series 80 1911 copy for the price, but with all the other, dare I say better options out there, it is a wonder how they remain in business. I would definitely urge you to do more homework on all the manufacturers, but if you had to buy one of those in the next 72 hours, I would tell you without reservation (as a former para owner) to go with Springfield.
Have one and i swear by it. Love it. Better then my Kimber
I have one and it works flawlessly after breakin. Great gun for the money. Para has a winner with the GI Expert.
