 Makarov for self defense?

I knwo the mak round is slightly hotter than the /380, but I consider the .380 a MINIMUM for ccw use. I have shot a buddy's Eastgerman Makarov and it is fairly accurate and not too bad recoil, pertty reliable by what he says, and simple as hell to breakdown .

I have decided against getting a .380 to replace my current 9mm sigma I carry (Mainly due to size and 17rnd 9mm capacity), but I was wondering how effective it would be against a badguy, and which models have hi cap mags,as my buddy's only has 8rounds in the mags.

Also ammo seems to be pretty scarce too. Can this be expected to get even rarer further down the years?

Buy ammo by the case, that's what I do.

Mine is a Bulgarian. I think the round is acceptable for self defense, although it's about the lowest I will go and feel comfortable with. I'll occassionally carry a P32 when I can carry nothing else, but my Glocks usually get carried. The Makarov is a bit of a back up or glove box gun for me mostly.

But it worked well for the KGB for a long time.

Nice pic. What is the cartridge second from the left? Which once do you think expanded the best?

From left to right

Hornady 95gr XTP, Blazer 90gr GDHP, Barnaul 95gr HP, Silver Bear 115gr HP

I like the Silver Bear the best, followed by Blazer, Hornady, and Barnaul, based on the expansion and penetration I saw.

If you're interested in some 9x18 performance stuff, look here.

Thanks for the great info.

I also heard if you carry .380 (and the mak is almost the same), for self defense might aswell carry FMJ or SP instead of HP, as the penetration might not be enough on a fully expanding HP bullet .

Since then I have changed to a PT911 for cold weather carry, and deciding between a mak and a bersa thunder .380 for warmer weather/summer.

nuke, the mak as you well know is dependable and can be quite accurate. if you can't get it done wiht eight rounds, it's time to start knitting blankets(sarcasm at it's fullest!)

i've learned from purchasing ammo. my next purchase will be per thousand.

you might have a nice halfway point with the bersa though. either way, i'm sure you'll be fine.

Yeah I know about the dependability of the makarovs.
Do they have any good CCW holsters for it?

I am going shooting monday and will try to see whats the best accuracy I can get with my buddy's East German Mak. I just find it hard to find a good overall concealcarry gun as I am a very picky person and want the best accuracy, most stopping power in the smallest size possible. I know.. Too much to ask, but still..

I use a Don Hume IWB leather holster, works good for me.

that is a very nice holster.

nuke, i hear ya!! might need a tweak, i think my sites need a quick adjustment because I KNOW dan's bulgy is more accurate than mine. his is dead on. was last week.

and i think it has more than enough power for what you need. only 1mm shorter than a standard 9.
