I just purchased an east german makarov from cole distributing. It should be here this week. I paid 325 for the police issue with papers and an extra 25 for hand select. I also bought a lanyard and a stasi police holster marked MDL. I cannot wait for this to pistol to arrive. I am not knew to firearms and I have quite a few myself. I frequent the ak, ar, and curio and relic forums. Thats how i came to find out that east german mak's are C&R eligible. I do have a question regarding the finish on the safety selector and the hammer. Why are some that i have seen a purplish color? If mine has it, should i strip the finish and re-blue them? When the mak is in I will post pics.

Any help is appreciated. TIA!!!

The finish on the safety and the hammer are the result of different heat treating. If my memory serves correct. I wouldn't refinish them. Makarovs are great guns. I CCW mine in a kydex IWB holster. The only change I am looking at making is a barrel swap to .380 to make it cheaper to shoot.

The different color is from the heat treatment the hammer gets.

Why don't you go to Makarov.com and look around.

I would replace the recoil spring with a new #17 spring from Wolff Gunsprings, or if you are going to use your Makarov a lot, get the #19 spring.

Different Heat Treat.

IMHO that is what makes them different. I personally would never change them over.

I also wonder if the finish on them takes longer to wear off than a traditional blue job? Anybody know?
