 2001 era Kimber question

I have a friend offering a 1911 in trade for my Glock 19. It's tempting, but I don't know much about 1911s.

I called Kimber today, and they said the pistol is from 2001, and is pre firing-pin plunger safety. All it says is "Custom" on the slide, but I can't seem to find much about that model.

It seems like Kimber gets a lot of mixed reviews online, but this is a good opportunity for me to get into the 1911 platform with the trade I'm looking at, and I'm wondering if it's worth taking the plunge.

I took the slide apart, checked the extractor, firing pin, etc, and everything looks to be barely used. It was an officer's duty gun for a while, until the dept. didn't allow 1911s anymore. Is there anything I should look for on the gun? Wear on rails, on the barrel, etc?

I bought one of these "pre-II" firing pin lock new in box about 12 years ago for $750.00.
Best 1911 I own. Mine is stainless steel and is marked "STAINLESS". I would never part
with mine. It is basicly a series 70 Colt 1911. If I were you I would make the trade and
thank him. Assuming the Kimber is in good condition is worth more than any Glock. You
will likely never see another as most folks tend to hang on to theirs.

In your GD post, you mentioned it was a Custom II - if you've confirmed that it is a Series I gun, by all means, do the trade.

A plain custom is basically their entry level 5", full-sized 1911.

I bought one of those Kimbers in July 2001. It's been fantastic. Superbly accurate and reliable right out of the box.

Yeah, that was my mistake. It's a Series I gun.

The more I read online, the more armchair commandos I see bashing Kimber, but with very little actual data to back it up.

I'm sure some problems/complaints are warranted, but a lot of the people complaining don't even own a Kimber and heard something from someone about how bad they are.

I have a pre series II kimber Still going strong with some slight upgrades over the years. It has to be close to 10 years old and a metric ton of ammo down range. All I had for years of USPSA and IDPA use.

I'd purchase another pre series II kimber.

I had one that was made in 01 or 02 and it was a great 1911, only reason I let it go was to help fund a Baer.

Those earlier Kimbers tend to run pretty well in my experience.

I have one with about 35K rounds through it. The finish is gone, but the gun runs great.

The only thing I'll say different than the others is that I have a Team Match II, and I love it even if the trigger has the safety. It's been absolutely reliable. If you want a series 70 style, Kimber still makes a few models, just look for names without "II" behind them.
