Has anyone seen this? Ares Armor is doing preorders for an 80% frame. Apparently it isn't an actual firearm until you add the slide rails, barrel seat and the two rear pin holes.

I believe I will see a unicorn before I see an 80% frame priced properly.

Seems like just a few years ago you could buy 80% frames in bulk quantities for about $25 each.

I would want for this project, a mill head that's been squared to it's table or table trued. Difference between Chinese cheap and quality of a Bridgeport mill. Then find an 80% receiver jig, not hard. Google search will have a few options.

Then you will have ATF to deal with because receiver is required to have serial number and registered with them.

Unsure how you do for one gun. Whether letter of variance is required or not.

Not wanting to cast clouds over a project like this but to do it right and within ATF regs it's not cost effective. If you're notion is you want to do, to hell with what one receiver might cost it's certainly a worthy endeaver.

You don't have to worry about the ATF if you are manufacturing it for your own personal use. You don't even need to place a serial number on it, though the ATF recommends that you do.

The 80% frames make no sense economically. They do present a good challenge for those who like a challenge.

What exactly is needed to make it complete? I read the description on the site but lets say that I'm ignorant in this area

To complete this frame all that need be done are the slide rails, barrel seat and the two rear pin holes.

I've built guns on several 80% frames, most of which were KT Ordnance. Cutting the rails is straightforward, as is cutting the barrel seat. Where you will get into trouble is on the pin holes. Unless you have a digital readout on your mill, it will be very difficult to locate them properly. Hopefully the finished product will have the hole locations marked on the outside of the receiver.

It is legal to complete it to 100% for your own use. No serial number is required.

These days I just find it easier to buy several completed frames for my builds. I'd rather not pay the premium for an 80% frame and I'd rather not waste the time completing them.

No permit, registration, serial number is required for non-NFA firearms.

I remember someone selling 1911 jigs for the hole placement. Many are available for AR15 style receivers.

What is it made out of?
Is $99 just a deposit or is that the total cost?

$99 now, $99 upon delivery, so a $50 break if you pre-order. Man that doesn't' seem like such a good deal anymore! I think the wording on their site needs a little tweak ($99 down instead of just "$99"). My .02.

that being said, is it a polymer lower half on the 80%? It's hard to make out on the small thumbnails they posted on the site.

I believe it is, which makes it even harder to pay $250 for something that is mostly plastic. At least STI 2011 frames are made by STI.

Good point, does anyone know who is making these?

But is the metal SS or just steel? I bought one of the decorator frames from SARCO, finnished it up and went to blue it, OOPS! SS! Now I have a Terminator 2 clone gun.
