P22 - When did they get better?
Ok, So I am in the market for a P22, I like the way they look and the feel of them.
A ton of people post about how they are unreliable. And people always respond with "They fixed the problems with the newer models" or "The model with a B on the mag is the one that is good".
Well my question is, in what year did they change the P22 so it was more reliable with cheaper ammo? I am planning on using cheaper ammo, some people say they can use any ammo and the gun works fine for them (this is what I am looking for). Do I need to go with the newest one they have out (11' model)?
At a local gun shop they have an green p22 for $239 used in good shape, I believe it was made in 09' (I called them and asked for the date code on the side of the barrel). But I did not get to check the mag to see what the letter is on it and no one ever posts what year they revised the mag to have the "xx-B" on it.
I ask because I have a 9mm handgun, and it is just to expensive to shoot. 9mm - 1000rds is like $200-$250 vs .22lr - 1000rds is like $30-$40 vs .22 stingers - 1000rds is like $100 (I was at a gun show this weekend and saw 1000rds of factory american eagle 9mm for $200 but I couldnt bring myself to buy it because I could buy a p22 and 2000rds for under $300.
Welp, I hope someone can throw me some good information about this. I have done some research on this but people never say years, they only say "newer models" so don't be afraid to use years.

Im also wondering this. And 239 for a P22 is rediculously cheap, they are going for over 300 now I think.
I have one of the original P22s I bought back in 2002. It has been ultra reliable with Walmart bulkpack and I now have somewhere around 20,000+ rounds through it. I have replaced the barrel (used to shoot Thunderbolts and then lead up like crazy, cleaning it out took a toll on the barrel). Around 15,000 rounds the slide cracked and was replaced (I am convinced the slide issues are due to the barrel extension attachment).
In the end, the P22 goes with me anytime I go shooting, love shooting it. And I would definitely buy it again.
I paid $209 with two mags when I bought it. Rarely see them for less than $300 now.
There was some talk of mags that had feeding problems, I never experienced this.
if you are wanting a .22 to train with i would look at the M&P22 pistol that just came out. its the same size as the M&P 9mm but 12 round .22.
if you are just looking for a plinker i would say get a Ruger mark III 22/45

I would have to agree with this, although I did have an early model P22. My early model p22, had mutltiple FTF and FTEs with everything except mini mag ammo. Then my slide cracked. Walther did take care of me but I quickly traded it off on another gun. I sincerly hope that Walther did fix these things because they're neat as can be for a little .22 but my experience soured me on owning another for awhile.

The gun shop I work in just got a M&P22 range gun in (Model 222000) and it runs great. I broke it in with 200 CCI Mini Mags 40 GR FMJs and didn't experience a single problem. After that we ran about 150 rounds of Federal 550 Bulk Pack with absolutely no problems.
All I am saying is take a look at the M&P22.
