Turning 21 soon and need some help. I'm planning on buying a used .22 handgun to get some practice on and then buying a .40 later on.

What would you suggest for the .22? I'm looking to stay around $300 or under

Ruger Mark III 22/45 with Replaceable Panels. You're welcome.

I was thinking about the ruger but instead a mark II. Anybody have anything against the Mark II?

Nothing wrong with it, but for 20-30 bucks extra you can make the Mark III like a Mark II with better ergonomics.

If you're looking for a dedicated .22, then by all means get the Ruger as advised above.

Do you know what kind of .40 you want? If you have the funds and want, for example, a Sig P226 or P229, you can get those firearms in .22. When you're ready, you just purchase the .40 conversion kit (barrel and slide) and drop it on the frame you already own. IIRC, most of the Sig offerings on Gunbroker with a .22 run about $500. Then you pay another $230 when you want the centerfire conversion.
