 11-87 barrel chopping

Any problems come from chopping the barrel on an 11-87? Gas impulse wise.....Need any port or piston work?

Never cut a gas shotgun off before, I bought em that way.

In. I was asking a similar question earlier:

What is the original barrel length, and how short do you want to go?

IIRC 1100's and 1187's with factory short barrels have 2 gas ports vs. 1 for the longer barrels....

Its going to depend a lot on (1) How much shorter you make the barrel (2) the barrel's original gas port(s) diameter and (3) the shell you want to shoot (velocity, payload).

This page lists some of the various factory gas port diameters for various barrel lengths

An 11-87 barrel of 26" or longer will have a self-regulating gas system, which allows it to adapt to some degree if the barrel is chopped. I cut a 26" vent ribbed barrel to 22" and it has run 100% with any loads I fed it, including light comp birdshot, for over 12 years.

mine didn't fare as well as Mr Blagga's... I cut an 11/87 back to 21-22" and basically had to weld up the ports under the clip, and turn it into an 1100 barrel... other ports opened up to close to .125"

Currently, It's a 28 inch Premier gun, but I may buy a second barrel for the cutting if I can find one I like for a decent price. I've noticed it's difficult to get a super nice blued 870 barrel, for less money than I payed for the guns. I haven't looked into the 11-87 yet, but I expect the same.

I want to cut it down to 18"-20".....not sure yet. Either +2 or +3 at the corresponding rib post, leaning more toward 18" I think.

Why not just order a short barrel if you're going to buy a barrel and cut it?

Wish I could, but I don't think Remington ever made an 18"-20" blued, vent rib barrel.....wish it was that easy for 870's also.

Only reason I'd buy a barrel to cut is to preserve the original, and what little value it may add if I ever sold it. I may decide it ain't worth the money too.....dunno yet.

I don't know why you want a vent rib, but Midway lists an 18" parkerized for $149 and a blued 18" for $167.....

Just personal preference. Been shootin vent rib so long, anything else seems unatural.

The 21" barrel only came on certain 11-87's and cannot be purchased new, only a used take-off. However, Midway has a 22" Competition Master barrel for an 1100 that will work. If you decide to use the gun for 3-gun, especially IDPA, the 22" barrel makes it a lot easier to add a magazine extension and still be legal. Have both barrels for my 11-87, which originally came with the 21", and like them both. Also with these barrels, if you try shooting low power shells and the gun stops cycling, try adding the activator first before opening up the gas ports.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

I'm thinking I'm just gonna cut the original barrel off about 18" I guess. Its a pretty gun, but I don't see it becoming a collector peice, so I ain't gonna worry about preserving integrity. The cost of a second barrel is just not worth it to me. Used or new, they're nearly half what i paid for the gun.

Think I'll get the activator to have on hand, and I don't really shoot anything light, mostly 3-3/4dr 1-1/4oz reloads. So i might be okay, if not I'll look into the port work.

Do that and you'll have a loose rib in no time unless you have plans to address that.

Sounds like you got a good deal on the gun...they usually fetch upwards of $500 in great condition and unaltered. If you just lop 10" inches off the barrel, you'll have a worthless barrel and a stocked receiver worth about $250.
