 Mossberg 500 question

I found an old beat up 500 for $125. Thinking of buying it cutting the barrel down and leaving it out of the safe in the bedroom. That way I don't have a lot of value lying around. I am a big fan of Remington but I don't know much about Mossbergs. What do you all think??

I would say $125 is a little much for a beat up mossberg.

I have a couple beaters, and love them.

The tang mounted safety is very nice.

Nice thing about 500's is they will hold 6 2 3/4 shells or 5 3 inch shells.

They lack the ability to have a extended mag tube added.

for $100 more buy new. these mavericks are the same but the safty is trigger mounted like a 10/22. i like it better for a pistol grip. the security comes in 6 and 8 shot versions and take all mossberg 500 parts and accessories

= Not sure if serious.

A new Mossberg Maverick 88 doesn't cost much more, but as long as it isn't too ratty, $125 isn't crazy.
For what it's worth, I'm a certified Remington 870 armorer... and I pick Mossberg for myself (everything on a Mossberg is user-replaceable; if you need to replace your mag tube or ejector on an 870, that's a trip to the gunsmith).

thats one of the things i like about mossberg over 870s, but i still go with the ol 870..chances are, neither will need a part replaced..

Navy shotgun qualification includes firing the weapon from the hip @ 3 yds? range. If you let your hand ride up on the receiver, that safety will get you.

It's really not extremely rough. Not rusted but not much finish either. The stocks got some scratches but that won't matter for its purpose. I appreciate the info and keep it coming. I will be passing back by it Sat.and will probably pick it up unless someone has a reason not to.

Thanks for the info and opinions. I'll be waiting for more.

Based on that description, offer $75, be happy at $90, don't complain at $100 and call it fait at full price. Cut it to the length you want(within legal limits of course) degrease and krylon it to make it look semi-decent for $5 more.
