 Best all-round brand of 500 box/brick of .22 L/R??
bergunx  [Member]

I currently own the following .22 L/R firearms;

A) 2 Ruger 10/22 carbines
B) 3 Ruger Mark II pistols
C) 1 Walther P-22 pistol

I also plan on buying the following .22's within the next year;

A) Ruger SR-22 pistol
B) Ruger 10/22 target rifle
C) CMMG M4-LE carbine

Here are some of the more common .22's in my area;

A) Remington 22 Thunderbolts
B) Remington 22 Cyclone
C) Remington Golden Bullets
D) Remington 22 Game H/VLoads (400rds)
E) Winchester Super X H/V
F) Federal Champion 525 Value Pack
G) Blazer 525 Round Value Pack
H) Americam Eagle H/V (400rds)

Out of the above brands/types, what is the overall best "Bang of the Buck??"

My Walther P-22 will only work with ammo that's a little hot, like CCI's Mini-Mags. As for my Ruger carbines and pistols, they eat anything that's fed to them... I figure that the CMMG M4 .22 carbine will also function with hotter stuff too.

THANKS for looking!!

I just ,thankfully, finished a box of the golden bullets. The powder charge was sooooo miss matched it was almost funny!! It was literally (use your imagination) pop pop BANG pop flub pop flub flub flub BANG BANG po pop pop pop flub flub BANG BANG. I dont know why, but the wife, whom hasn't gone shooting much recently commented on how much different every shot sounded!!! I just bought one of the federal 550 packs and everyone out of the 275 that I shot sounded the same, and were reasonably accurate out of my 10/22. the golden bullets were reasonably accurate at 25 yards too, but I'd bet out to 50 a lot of the flubs would've been way low and the BANGS might've been high!!

I haven't tried all those on the list. But I have found that CCI Blazer outperforms the more expensive Minimags through two 10/22s. Both put 10 shots into just under 1" at 50 yds with Blazer, maybe 1 1/8" with Minimags. One inch compares favorably to CCI SV (poor man's match) that does the same at 50 yds in those two rifles. Interstingly, those two 10/22s outshoot my old 1966 Anschutz when all three are fed Blazer. The Annie does significantly better with SV.

I have tried Rem Thunderbolt (older equivalent) and they are nowhere near as accurate in any .22 I own. I will also add that the guys on rimfirecentral usually find the Federal about as good as the Blazer, on average. Blazer and SV also work great in my Dad's Mark2, my Smith 41 and Single Six.

The big problem with "most accurate" questions relating to .22 rimfires is that each gun is an individual. So regard what I have said only as a generalization. If I were you I'd pick up a 525 of Blazer and a 525 of Federal Champion and run the comparison. Buy a metric crap-ton of the winner. I would skip the other stuff, unless results are unacceptable with both those.

Good luck.

Thanks Sam!!

I agree that "most accurate" is a pretty open statement, but for me, consistancy and being able to cycle through various firearms are what is important to me. I mainly do plinking with my .22s, but I would like to be somewhat accurate with each shot as well.

I will take your advise and go with the Blazer value packs and the Federal Champion over the other stuff.

Again, thanks for the great information!!

I'm plinking my way through all the ammo I have - except for my CCI Velocitors. And I'm buying only those.

Hyper-velocity
Most accurate round in all my .22LR's.
More expensive? Yes, but it's .22LR for pete's sake!

I'm a big fan of the Federal bulk-pack ammo. The Fed AutoMatch is even better.

I'll shoot Win if it's all I can get, but won't waste my time with Remington.

Blazer is great stuff if you can get it for less than $20/500.

I've always had good luck with the Federal 525 bulk packs. It's not match ammo by any means but for me it's always been more accurate than any other bulk ammo.
Federal Auto Match seems to be good stuff and pretty accurate, but I've seen several times when shooting in extreme cold that it seems to be underpowered. I've seen quite a few squib loads from this stuff in the winter, so apparently the powder is temperature sensitive.
Remington is absolute junk. It's filthy and inconsistent.
Blazer seemed to be accurate enough, but the one bulk box I bought had extremely hard primers. None of my .22's would set it off consistently. I finally gave it away to a guy I know who has a T/C contender, since the hammer on that gun hit hard enough to always set it off. Might have just been a bad batch, this was at the height of the last Obama scare and quality control might have slipped while they cranked up production.

Been buying that lately myself, good stuff.

A LOT of .22 ammo is pretty lousy nowadays, I have a lot of older plinking stuff and almost without exception, it is far more consistent then the new cheap ammo and the blame goes to the manufacturers for dropping their QC standards to what would pass for "pathetic." Rem GB is a perfect example, the older stuff was pretty decent, the new stuff, horrible, I won't even touch new GB, it has to be made with the care the Chinese put into making cheap firecrackers.

I think much of the problem is the fact that if you pull duds, the priming compound is very poorly distributed and they seem to skimp on it, I'm wondering if they cut back on the amount and the time to spin the case to distribute it evenly.

I had cases of Rem 15/22, and that stuff was pretty good, very consistent, Old Win super X was great, [250 round bulk packs] I have a bunch from one lot number saved back, it shoots amazingly tiny groups in my Ruger MK II.

I run Federal bulk pack in all my semi-auto .22lr, most all suppressed.

For a slight bit better accuracy, I run CC standard velocity, again, mostly suppressed.

For my Savage Mark II FV SR, I run only Wolf Match Target, again this is shot only suppressed.

I stay away from anything Remington and most of my guns really like Federal 525. Winchester 550 is slightly less reliable(see: weaker), but I need to try CCI blazer as I like most other CCI ammo.

Out of those I don't know, but I'm not a fan of bulk Remington rimfire ammo.

Remington Target .22 ammo is pretty decent if you can find it. WallyWorld here usually has it.

The Remington Golden Bullets...stay away from. From personal experience and quite a few others, this is the absolute crappiest .22 ammo that I've come across. FTE, FT Fire/Feed and according to many other's experiences, occasionally a blown casing. I like to shoot not fiddle around with crappy ammo.

Federal Bulk, Winchester Powerpoints, CCI have all worked well in my .22's, pistols and rifles. I prefer the higher quality ammo but if I run out of it, these are what I use in their place.

The 525 pack of Blazers are the exact same bullet/powder charge as the MiniMags withough the coating on the bullets. So go with the Blazers.

Winchester tac 22
I have ran 2,000 plus rounds In my 15-22, P22 and savage MK2 with good accuracy and very very few missfires like around 8 or 10 out of 2,000 or so.

I think we can all pretty much agree that most of Remington's 22LR is crap,

I have had good luck with federal hollow point 37gr, HV 22LR, I have also used pretty much the same thing made by Winchester with good results as well.

I use Federal Auto Match (325/box) for accuracy related shooting in bulk.
I use CCI subs for showing off the suppressor on a rifle.
I use Federal Bulk for plinking and high volume shooting.

I stick to anything Federal. I have had better luck with all types of Federal ammo. The worst is Remington followed closely by Winchester 333 and 555.

I shoot:

Federal 525rd, CCI (Blazer or Minimags), Winchester... in that order. Anything other than Remington really... never had good luck with that stuff.

I have had nothing but problems with the remington ammo, really dirty or misfires

CCI blazer is good but alot of smoke so I use it for practice only

Fed bulk I use for speed challenge since it is as good, no misfires, and little smoke

Here is what I use the most.

Cheap Plinking - Federal Champion 510( I think they're called Lighting now) and Federal Automatch

Hunting - CCI Velocitors

Target - Wolf Match Target. This stuff shoots the best groups in my CZ 452 and 10/22.

I didn't know that. I'll have to give the Blazers a try. I've been using CCI MiniMag in everything but my S&W 41 and my BSA International MkIV since the mid 60's. The S&W and BSA get std vel match ammo only.

Definitely interested and watching... Need to get out and shoot through some Aquila and other "high performance" ammo in my now "high-end" .22s.

I will say the REM "Golden Bullet" or whatever it was from a few years ago was a jam-o-matic in dang near every semi I tried it in... If it's not all gone, I'm sure I've thrown away far more than I've tried. Maybe it's improved? At a point a few years ago, I "disposed" of a lot that wasn't good enough to donate to the Boy Scouts...

Anyhow, I need a good "fun range day" soon.

Unless boy scouts are practicing malfunction drills, Rem Golden bullets aren't even worth donating. I have a box from maybe 4yr ago and am just waiting to find a decent use for it.

I just picked up some Blazers yesterday and they do seem very similar to Minimags but w/o the copper coating, just a wax coating. I'll shoot them this weekend.

CCI Blaser. I shoot between ten and fifteen thousand rounds of it a year (I run a college gun club) and I have had fewer failures than with any other bulk pack. I've tried them all from Aguila to Remington to Federal to nameless gunshow specials, and Blaser is not only heap, but really good stuff. The majority of those failures with Blaser popped the second time the were loaded into the chamber.

CCI blazer and Fed Automatch for my savage bolt,ruger MKlll and glock conversion kit. The blazer stuff stays sub for me out of my ruger MKlll and can find for around 15-17 a brick. When i want suppressed accuracy i use RWS subsonic first then CCI standard. Can't find any wolf match around for whatever reason....

The best ones I bought was back in the day at K-mart. The lazy sporting goods clerk didn't break the brick down into the individual boxes and I bought four bricks of winchester wildcat for 0.99 each!

CCI bulk is the best IMO, but it's not available locally at a decent price. Fed bulk is also an excellent choice as I have churned thru 1000's of rounds without any negative experiences. Cabelas just had their grand opening today in Wichita and fed champion bulk was $15.99. I stocked up and will be back for more.

If you could...are you talking about the CCI Blazers that are 40 gr round nose lead? Perhaps lubed with a wax like substance?
I can get these for $15/brick locally.

thanks...

when I started shooting Appleseeds a few years ago, I found out real quick what my 10/22's liked;
Win wildcats ($18.00 locally @ Academy) or Fed 510's ($1.80@ WW), both LRN boolits.

I had several flavors of HP bulk packs & had FTF's with all of them. didn't shoot any stingers
or Velicitors during those shoots; you could go thru a brick in 2 days & that's not in the budget.

So far as the pistols, I haven't shot my P-22 enough to find any problems children;

Just remember, if you ever get an AR .22LR adapter, keep it lead boolit free; having a dedicated
upper is much better, if you can afford it.

Thank you...

Your post caused me to order some of the Blazer 22s...they worked better than any ammo in my Green Mountain barrel that is usually picky with ammo...the new Ruger 25 round mags worked well...finally a high cap mag that works well.

You know what actually was another round that worked well and it was hot?...it was the HV Armscor hollow point.. It worked better than than the Fiocchi solids and the Federal (game-shok) HPs...in my gun...

YMMV...:-)

Those of you finding bricks of .22 for $15, where the hell are you finding this? It's $20 pretty much everywhere in Vegas. Even online it's more than that before shipping just about everywhere I look.
