There is an "X" on the barrel shank and also the side of the buttstock. I have looked around and cant seem to find any information on this X. I dont know if it is a referb mark or what? Also there are a good many numbers and letters on the stock as well, what are these? These markings are probably nothing special but I just wanted to make sure before I go and sand and refinish the stock. Thank you for your help.

Pretty sure the x is a refurb mark, but you can see if anything you have lines up with these http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinMarks.htm

Yes I know that in the case of K98 and Lugers that are Russian Captured an X denotes it is a Russian capture that has been refurbished. The same probably applies to Russian stocked weapons aswell.

Better question is where dose the triangle 25 refer to? The x is similaur to the x in the Ex marks on romainaian training rifles although much smaller. So there is a good possibility the marks are from romainia, maybe a training rifle or a referbisher. It's also similuar to the x marks on russian captuered and referbed k98s. If you find out what Triangle 25 stands for there are a lot of people that would like to know.

It's your rifle and all but why are you planning on sanding and refinishing? From the pictures, the stock looks like it is in great shape with some interesting markings. Why not just enjoy it as is and shoot the crap out of it?

The triangle 25 mark is one of the great mysteries.

Nobody knows what is means and, unless some forgotten documentation surfaces in the future, we'll probably never know.

Apparently the triangle and number mark is the mark of a repair facility,
A guy posted one with documenting here

The "X" looks like a Tula mark. Crossed hammers.

2nd from the right is a good one.

I wouldn't worry about that too much, just remove the stock break it into about 3 equal length pieces and place them in your fire place for next winter and then purchase one of those bubba plastic stocks and place it on the rifle.

That basically gets you to the same result as sanding down that stock and trying to refinish it.....

Or.. take your time, do it right, since your gun does not have any SIGNIFICANT historical value. I'm very pleased with how my mosin came out. I sanded lightly where the stamps were on mine, and they are still visible after my refinish.
