My Dad sent this to me. Looks to be a French Model 1840 Musket from what I found on the net. Doesn't appear to be a whole lot of info out there on these.
It does appear to be shorter than the one I found online. Possibly cut down at some point?
A couple of other things to note:
- "S.S.S.!!" is stamped on the stock
- Someone used small nails to spell out "EK"
- There are two stampings of "OHIO" on the stock.
Thousands of these were imported to the US at the start of the Civil War, mostly by the Union. They were generally disliked by the troops and were replaced by more modern weapons such as the 1861 Springfield and P1853 Enfield as soon as possible. They were made in calibers .69 - .71 and it should be about 56 inches long. The OHIO marking is often found on guns (mostly early war usage) used by troops from the state of Ohio (duh).

This appears to measure 48" total.
