The dawn of a new era for me!

Found a nice deal on a Ruger Old Army made in the early 80's I think.

Blue, adj sights
Box with all paperwork
100 Hornady Rn balls
Brass powder flask
Brass powder measure
felt wads
brass capper

All for $400 to the door!

Only thing I need is some powder, caps, and 'grease'.
And lots of advice...........

That was a good price. You don`t need grease, get yourself some wonder wads. They are lubercated felt wads that go on top of the powder & then the ball. They do the the lubing & keep things soft so you can clean it more easier. Also you don`t need grease on top of ball, because when you ram the ball in the chamber, it shaves off some lead & makes a seal. There is all ways to clean them too. I use Windex with Viniger in it. It clean as good as hot soapy water & it`s not as messy. How ever you do it make sure you oil it up good when finished cleaning.

Chain fire is nothing to fool around with! Grease on top of the ball is easy and cheap
Insurance, I would never fire a bp revolver without it and you are tempting fate if you do.

that is a fine firearm there , had one in early 80's. For some reason the ruger was harder hitting then the rest.
Sold it shootin a 1868 remmy now.
Hell of a buy!

The felt wonder wads are a direct replacement for grease on top of the ball. The "Old Dead Guys" used greased felt wads more often than grease over the cylinder mouth. For them it was a matter of convenience just like today and the grease wouldn't melt out on a hot summer day while carrying it on the range. Finally, after the first chamber is fired, grease on top of the ball in adjacent chambers is blown away leaving very little left to lubricate the ball and keep fouling soft in the barrel.

I grease the patch in my 50 long rifle , wonder wads in pistols , quit greasing pistols some 15 years ago.

Good score OP.

You don't need grease on top of the balls and a wad. One or the other. Personally I favor lubed wads because they are a lot less messy, and after the first shot or two, most of the grease covering the remaining unfired chambers is blown off anyway. I make my own wads by punching them from hard wool felt, then soaking them in melted lube made from paraffin, beeswax, and mutton tallow.

Re chainfires: They are a lot more likely to be caused by improperly fitting or missing caps than by a flash over getting past the ball, if you are using a properly oversize ball. (The ROA uses .457 balls, larger than the Italian BP revolvers.)
