NFA Tax Stamps: Convenient Ways To Keep Copies With You?
I searched but came up empty.
Any of you guys have convenient ways of carrying around your tax stamp papers?
Yes, I do realize several photocopies can serve sufficiently. Put one in each case/bag/car whatever.
Anyone ever do anything a bit more creative, like shrinking a copy down, so it's still legible but smaller, and maybe laminate it?
Just looking for something better than just cranking out several copies on paper that get tattered, ripped, crumpled...what have you.
Anyone?
I have photos of each page on my iPhone.
Shrinking them down and lamination seems to be the popular way to do it. There's cheap contact lamination you can get at the office store that is pliable so you can fold it to fit in a grip core or roll it to fit into a spare battery compartment.
I've color copied, shrunk and laminated mine, then punched a hole in the corner, and put a metal split ring through them.
I usually have the stack in the back of my NV box, under the foam. Keeps them all together, and very easy to carry.
Good ideas fellas, thanks.
Slug-O, ever have to produce the stamps based on iPhone photos? Wondering if that would be considered acceptable?
Laminated color copies. I've never shrunk mine down. The laminated color copies just stay under the foam in the specific case of that specific gun or suppressor. Simple enough.

You can shrink them down? This I did not know, but I like that idea! How small do you guys have them? Pictures?
Just shrunk a $5 stamp down to 75%, laminated and stuck it in the pistol grip of my new AOW!
I won't rely on it alone - but I will on a 50% reduction. Old eyes can read that. It takes young eyes to read the 75%
I just keep a photocopy in my gun case. Not fancy...but it works.
Is it a requirement to carry your tax receipt?

Yep, same here:

I have the same in my dropbox (cloud storage), in case anyone needs to see it on a larger screen.
I keep copies for the cans in the boxes they get toted in.
I keep a copy of the SBR form rolled up inside the stock.
I think a copy on your phone and on secure online storage somewhere that you can log into anywhere with internet access is not a bad idea.
not sure a mini copy is going to satisfy someone who wants to question your papers, almost looks too prepared and some old timer cop who knows nothing about NFA wont be able to read it...
I keep a full size copy of all forms in my range bag, folded into a square so it fits into a side pocket. Also keep a copy in a manila envelope. If for whatever reason I dont take my range bag or need to move a NFA item for repair or service, I just grab the envelope, they are all in there so I am guaranteed to have one for the item I am moving.
i just keep photos of the stamps with the serial number visible on the page, in my iphone.
no one has ever asked about my NFA items, but i have heard rumor of a range in dallas that questions and requires to see paper work of any NFA item brought into their range. id personally refuse.

NO. The only requirement is that if an ATF agent ever asked to see the stamp, to prove ownership / control, then you will have to provide that to him / her. There are so few LEO's that know NFA laws, but many more are becoming aware that suppressors are legal. Just carry the laminated copies as most LEO's will see that a professionally kept stamp record, along with courteous, professional behavior on your part, gives them little reason to mess with you. This all presumes of course, that you are not engaged in general asshattery or buffoonery anyway.
Carrying the shrunken, laminated copies is good enough to prove that you have a tax stamp. Since it is not required that you carry the stamp with the weapon, it is extremely unlikely that you would ever be charged, unless of course, you carried the item into a state that did not allow it, or if you transferred say, an SBR without the 5320.20.
If anything I said is incorrect, someone will be along to point pout more detail, and I am not an attorney and this is not legal advice.

Depends on the State. For example in Florida, MG, SBR, and SBS are illegal unless possessed in accordance with federal law. Without the paperwork PC would exist for an arrest under state statutes.
I bought some range bags from Midway. The bags came with some padded zippered cases that hold the forms perfectly. My copies are printed on heavy resume paper and are in sheet protectors. The padded cases have just enought padding to protect against bending and folding and provide great protection. I also keep a copy of the related Florida Statutes with the forms, along with the latest copy of my travel forms. I have two sets...one and a backup.
PS I have never been asked for forms.

Excellent catch, thank you!
