Thought I'd start a thread about what I had to put on for counterweight for my helmet to balance it. Might help other people on what they would need to balance a NOD. Anyway, I've got an Ops-Core FAST shell using a standard USGI Rhino mount with either a MUM Mini-14 or an ITT Pinnacle PVS-14 with their appropriate "factory" J-arms.
I started with an EOG Low Profile counterweight (short) but it was not enough so I had to add the EOG admin/battery pouch. I currently have four CR123's and two lithium AA's in the pouch and it balances perfectly with the MUM Mini-14. Also, I had to add extra velcro to the back of the helmet to add the second pouch. With the PVS-14 it's still a little front-heavy, but just a touch. I also have a Surefire HL1-A-TN mounted on the right side (not that it should matter). I'll take some quick pics tonight of the helmet setup tonight if anyone is interested in seeing it.
ETA - anybody else want to put their counterweight specs out?

I use some fishing weights basically in a duct tape "pouch" with a strip of velcro on it. Ghetto but its cheap and it works.
I have thought about simply rigging a small pouch with a loaded 20 round AR mag in it. The weight should be just about right, and a spare mag to boot if you really, really need it!

strong enough Velcro (3M) attached to the lower portion of the 20rnd'er (wont interfere with inserting into the mag well) would be nice... &n useful..
I use 2 loaded 20rnd mags. Works great weight wise but the mag pouch I use doesn't attach well to the A-Alpha so I am going to see if TNVC's OSOE works with the snap mount on my helmet.
SEAL's (among others) have several unique setups that I have seen - mostly custom. individual loops for each battery to everything else. I'll see if I can find some pic's of the different setups to give some ideas of what all is possible as a counterweight...
Back in the day the guys in the riggers loft would get requests to sew up some custom pouches and gear. Sometimes I wish I still had that commercial sewing machine.
