Hog hunting questions
I have a PVS14 and a DBAL but now im looking for a IR light, ill be hunting hogs no further than 100 yards, would you recommend the Surefire 952V or the ELR torch? thanks in advanced
Luna Optics IR Laser Illuminator. Adjustable power, adjustable beam, and has a lot more distance than the others mentioned.
max range was 100-200 on the luna optics unless im reading wrong, the Torch is 500+ max
Dont know anything about Luna. I can say with the utmost confidence that the torch will illuminate at MUCH farther distances than what you require. My guess is you will want to see piggies at a great range even if you do not shoot at them. If the Luna is much cheaper I might go that way but for the hogs at my ranch, I'd rather be able to see and shoot at a farther range that 100-200 meters. YMMV.

I hunt in GA and the area where I hunt you 100yards is the longest distance without hitting woods...thick woods. anyone have experience with the surefires and hunting
I use both the Surefire M1 (75 yard range but soft light) and "Da Torch". Both works well for me and I can easily get 400 yards with my torch.
I have always used and supply with a set of goggles when I sell them a 2 or 3 D cell maglite with a 830nm IR filter. You can spot Deer and Pigs out to 600yds with the set up. cheap and they work. We do alot of Red Deer hunting down here and hunting river flats the further you can pick them out the better.

I have the EagleTac 850 IR 3,400mW IR flashlights mounted on my rifles with the ELR Torch-V IR and they both work great out to 400 yards.

Have you (or anyone else here) tried the IR P60 type drop-ins they carry
(scroll down to last two modules listed) ?
If they worked well enough they would make for an inexpensive IR illuminator.
Yeah, my friend is using those, they work very well too.
They use a CREE IR LED emitter, whereas the actual flashlight I linked to previously uses an OSRAM IR LED.
The OSRAM 850nm IR LED is more powerful by a factor or at least 2 or 3.....but the CREE IR LED still works very good too.

I know that SolarForce makes an IR P60 drop-in as well but I came across some poor reviews online and didn't purchase one. I wonder if the SpiderFire version is the same one rebranded.
What would you estimate the effective range is of the Cree version vs. the Osram?
My OSRAM 850nm IR flashlight has a identification and shooting range of 225 yards on low (500mW) and approx. 1/2 mile on high (3.4mW) when using the USGI 3X Magnifier through my PVS-14.
I easily shoot hogs @ 225 with it but that is the max range of my weapon-cartridge combination.
Can't say about the CREE except that it does work out to over 100 yards that I have seen my friend using it with my NV gear.
I went ahead and purchased "da torch" from TNVC. they seem to hold there resale if I dont like it. Anyone have experiece with a Surefire Raid?
I purchased the Streamlight TL2 IR and am very happy with it. Works well in the 100 yd range and cost about $80.
Yes, the Streamlight works great out to 200 yards (my observation) using the nvg without any magnification. Da Torch, behind a dayscope works much better at longer distances. Different apps. One is (IMO) better with magnification another works better without. I'm a rookie at this, but this is what I've found.
