Gun Kote my XD Slide. Quick question..
So I bought an old Springfield XD 45 that was pretty worn. I've fully disassembled the slide including hammering out the sights. Sandblasted with Aluminum oxide and thoroughly degreased. I've done rifles before but I'm having trouble getting an even coat on this slide. How do you go about filling in all the tight spaces on the inside without ruining the aesthetically more important outside of the slide with overspray?
Thanks,
DOC
Always spray the hard to reach places first, in this case it would be the inside of the slide.
Post some pics when you're done! I'm about to sling some Gun-Kote on my FNX slide, barrel, and my AR-15, and my brother's p250 barrel and frame. Good luck!
what gun are you using and what PSI are you spraying at?
a gun with adjustments makes a BIG difference as well as technique....practice practice practice.
I work @ KG.
We use Paasche VLS brushes with #3 nozzles and we spray @ about 30PSI.
The new brushes have a hood around the tip and they prefer a slightly lower pressure.
If you are spraying white, spray at a higher pressure with a lower material flow ( go lighter on the trigger finger). This will help prevent re-liquifying the coating while thickening it up.
In addition to doing the hardest to reach parts first, you also need to constantly think about the flow of air as it passes over the surface. An exposed ridge with cause turbulence, that will affect where the droplets land.
Sometimes your best bet is to go heavy and fast with your passes. other times it pays to go super light and slow and close. get analytical with your air flow over the surfaces (and the results you are seeing as you spray) and you will be better prepared to make the correct changes before errors get beyond your control.
Sometimes you just have to start over again. I am working on a white base coat that is exposed on about half of the gun. I'm having a devil of a time getting enough white on those exposed areas to be a nice solid white. The coating wants to run away from the sharp edges leaving it thinner and greyish. Total pain in the ass, so I feel your frustration.
