I'm looking to get a new scope to mount on my Savage 93R17, and my budget is ~$150. I'm looking in the $80-150 range on Optics planet and have seen a couple I like. What brands should I avoid like the plague? I already know to mostly avoid Barska, NCStar, and Tasco, but they carry a few brands I've never heard of, such as Alpen, Leatherwood, and a few others. I'd prefer one that can zoom to 12-16x (i.e. a 3-12x or a 4-16x) instead of the 9x I have now (3-9x40) that is now dead (couldn't take 223 any more, can't even boresight it). I'm also hoping to find one that is illuminated. Any suggestions?
I suggest - REALITY Check !!! You wont get a useable great variable 16x with illumination for that price. Dont rule out the Tasco while not great they have been around a lot longer than the rest of the cheap brands so stay away from the others you mentioned but consider Tasco they are in your price range or better yet look at the Vortex line I think SWFA.com has a deal on one of their higher power variables.

hence the "~" in front of the $150, I'm willing to pay more if it's actually worth it to pay more.
