Looking for ideas for a truck gun.
The only prerequisite is that it be cheap, have open sights, and in .223. I don't want anything nice, this will be thrown under the seat, banged around and if it gets stolen, I will not miss it much. I was hoping to find something in the few hundred dollar range. I thought about a Handi-rifle, but the don't have open sights in 223. Any ideas?
Saiga .223?
+1

Saiga 170270
$380 shipped from Buds
No personal experience but my S12 is GTG.
Keltec SU16?

Ummm sure.
That rifle is .223 but I have not used that variant of saiga.
I have used the 12 guage version and have been happy.

Those have always interested me. I have handled a few, the handguards seem flimsy but other than that I would own one for the right price.
New Mini-14 Tactical. Perfect truck gun.
ETA: Didn't see your budget requirements. Scratch the Mini off the list.
WASR-3
A few hundred dollar range will probably mean a used one these days.
OP, IMO you may want to either rethink your caliber choice or up your budget a bit. Depending on what you want it for a single shot handi rifle may do ok, but for a truck gun I would prefer some sort of repeater. A saiga would meet your caliber choice at about twice your budget, or you could go with an sks for a little less. I think one of the best truck guns on a budget is a used marlin 30-30 levergun. Powerfull enough to take most game you will run into, holds enough ammo to be an effective SD weapon if needed, more than accurate enough and ammo is available anywhere ammo is sold. Hell I see it behind the counter at a lot of little gas stations out in the middle of nowhere, places that dont sell guns just keep a little ammo and fishing tackle on hand.
It seems that unless you get a good deal all of the above options are out of your price range. I agree that an SKS maybe more what you are looking for, or a 30-30 lever action.

i would say this because, if I'm not mistaken, they take standard ar mags.
OP if you have your heart set on a handi rifle and they do not offer one in .223 with open sites, you may be able to buy a section of 1913 rail long enough and have a smith mount it, and then go with the magpul flip up front and rear sites?

They do, but the OP will have to look long and hard to find a used one in his price range. The cheapest place to find guns online usually is buds,
this was the only one they had listed in stock and it runs $547. The other models are out of stock so they are not giving prices, but I think they all run in the same ballpark.
If he hunts around on the net he may find one used closer to his budget.

Whoops! My bad, I never followed the link, just looked at the pic. The pic is a .308.
I have seen used mini 14's for $350-$400 in the local gun shops. They didn't look too beat up.
Any particular reason for it being .223? You can get a Mosin Nagant 91/30 for around $110, cut the barrel down to 16-18" (and for the love of God, check to be sure it's not a rare rifle first) and get a couple spam cans of ammo, all for a reasonable price, not to mention that in the long run the 7.62x54mmR ammo will save you a good amount over .223.

Mainly because I reload 223 and have tons of it on hand. I thought about a Mosin, but the main the was having lots of ammo on hand already.
After a little research I found Rossi makes a break action .223 / 20ga combo with iron sights for around $250 but I cant find one in stock anywhere.
link to specs
Used century Golani? I picked this one up for $450

Again, excellent choice, but out of the OPs budget range.
Probably the rossi will be his best choice for caliber and price.
Thanks, that looks like what I was looking for.
