First, why is there no SBS forum? Second, is it worth putting in the paperwork to SBS a Remington Express Magnum receiver? I have one and I see Remington factory 14" barrels can be had for $125.00. Seems like a inexpensive way to get a fun and useful new toy. BUT is an 870 Express "good enough" quality to go to the trouble and spend the $200? Any thoughts appreciated.

I think so....it's no 70s wingmaster but who cares. I would actually prefer to use an express for a project like that. It will be a great fun gun. 14" barrel on an 870 is just about the perfect practical length if you ask me. If you can get the barrel for 125 then you are looking at $325 + engraving for a nice fun SBS. I say it's worth it.

They catch a lot of flack here, but I have no problems with the Express models. Sure, they aren't as nice and finished as a Wingmaster, but there is plenty of utility in them and as you say, it is a good way to create an inexpensive SBS. I did replace that cheeseball shell follower with a better one, but just because it is a pretty critical part and easily and expensively replaced. I have no doubt that the shotgun would outlast me, especially since I am not going to be shooting skeet with it but just messin' around and as you say, having fun.

I say go for it. Just don't do like I did and have a local hack "engrave" it, but instead send it somewhere decent like these folks: Orion Engraving

I think it would be worth it. I have several different types of shotties for different purposes. My beater is a 870 tactical that I use for about everything from skeet to small game. I personally like them more than siagas, benallies and fn's that I have shot and owned. Can't go wrong with one In my opinion

I have two 870 SBS'. One is a Remington factory U.S. Secret Service model, built on a Police receiver. The other was built using an Express Magnum receiver I bought used at a gun show. They are both great guns. There is no reason an Express receiver can't be used for an SBS build. Go for it and be happy.

If you engrave your shotgun with a Dremel, please post photos of it pronto. I'll go dig up my "Epic Shit Storm" graphic to post as soon as you put up those pictures.

Wouldn't dream of it. Even if I could do it and make it legal I know I couldn't make it look nice. I will leave it to the pros.

Absolutely not! The idea of giving some jackwagon jerking material with my name and address info is out of the question. All of my engravings on my stamped guns were dome by me with my Dremel. It's legible and in compliance with the standards required. I don't care what you think and I'm not selling any of them to you anyway. Go snap a few more pics of your safe queens to show off to everyone.

I'll do it...I'd engrave a sub $200 870 barrel on the bottom in a rather small font. It works and it doesn't cost a lot.
Heck with a bit of practice it doesn't even look as bad as fluting the barrel at home.

It doesn't take long to figure out how you got that ARFCOM handle, there Surly.

I do my form 1's myself also, with my hand held harbor freight engraver. I don't care if they look professional or not, if i scratched the info in with a nail it isn't going to affect the function of the gun.

I love my 870 with 14" factory barrel (bought the barrel from Botach, of all places, they were $20 cheaper than everyone else and I didn't care how long it took to arrive, it showed up a week later ), originally I had the Speedfeed birds head grip on it, but I changed over to a Hogue 11" (their shortest) LOP stock after I bashed myself in the teeth when my support hand didn't have a good grasp on the forearm one time.

It really is as simple as buy at Walmart, engrave, CLEO sig, $200 check, wait 4 months and add a factory barrel.

I like mine, however, you can find factory 870 SBS for less than $400, so if you are going to pay for a barrel and engraving, then all of the sudden you are at a poit going, hey, might was well buy the whole shotgun....

Will Remington provide factory/warranty support for a civilian-purchased SBS?

I'm really leaning toward one of those bullpup conversions from BULLPUPUNLIMITED now. At $279 it's cheaper and faster than an SBS and the reviews seem really good. I'm not sure how the "cool factor" equation works out in the end....

Well that's really stylish, but it has nothing to do with being NFA or SBS and there is a bullpup forum for those types of weapons/conversions. If you're not into stamp collecting, I can't explain it to you.
