Hope I didn't jack my SCAR's piston up...

Haven't cleaned the piston since I got it so figured I'd break that down and clean it. Tried to use a GI cleaning rod and the loop that came with it to push the piston out. Loop was a little to big to fit in the cylinder and got stuck before I realized it. I was able to force it free. Doesn't appear to be any damage to the cylinder but the loop is slightly gouged on the edges. I'm a dumbass.

Why are you guys bothering to clean the piston again? Sounds a lot like cleaning the gas tube on an AR.

I'm sure it can't hurt. I cleaned mine yesterday for the first time in a year.

I think that the procedure for removing the gas piston on the SCAR is the dumbest part about the rifle. I have a 17S (.308) and I need to get a cleaning rod and .223 brush to knock the piston out. I feel like they definitely could have come up with something simpler.

Use an allen key. Seriously.

It does. I have one. It's made of plastic. I'm thinking about seeing if a cast resin tool would hold up to use.

But an allen key does the trick quite easily and inexpensively. I pastidipped the long end of one to avoid scarring the receiver before I got the .mil tool.

The gas relief holes in the system get plugged up, making the rifle work a lot harder then it should have to. I clean my 17s entire system after every shooting session. I keep an allenhead wrench in my MagPul Moe grip.
The military manual says to scrub the inside of the gas knob also, and to pay special attention to all the little friggin' gas holes.
