SCAR 16 and P Mags / Lancer Magazines
Many magazines as they come from the factory should not be used in SCAR 16s. The reason is, the way the magazine is made it pushes up on the bolt hold open device. Below are two pictures. The bolt hold open in its normal position and one with an unmodified P Mag in my SCAR's lower receiver.
Normal position:
Unmodified PMag inserted in the lower. (Note I have the magazine field stripped) Notice how the bolt hold open is pushed slightly up.
Here's the offending portion of the magazine:
With a small file or even your pocket knife modify the rear of the magazine so it looks similar to this. Have your lower receiver near by to test your field stripped magazine to check your progress.
Or if you have Lancer magazines, make it so it looks similar to this:
After the modification, your P Mag or Lancer doesn't push up your bolt hold open device until your magazine is depleted!
Hope this helps anyone out that has a SCAR and wants to use your P Mags!
By the way, you should check all your magazines out in your SCAR. If the magazine pushes up on the bolt hold open device, I've heard this can cause wear on your bolt's locking lugs. YMMV.
Also, be sure to check your magazines with either 2 rounds in them or field stripped. It should push the bolt hold open up if the magazine is empty.

My 16s has issues with Pmags to the extent that all I use with it is G.I. mags with a Magpul Gen 111 follower. The bolt on mine also tends to wear at the r.h. feed lip on the P-mag, and possibly the lack of resistance from the cartridge as it is stripped from the P-mag also causes too high a bolt speed. I don't really claim to know why, but all the bolt locking lug wear stopped when I went back to G.I. mags. I am disappoint, as I really like the P-mags, but they were never designed for the SCAR, and the SCAR was never designed for them. Catch 22
Mine loves PMag's, with the modification of course
I use only STANAG magazines with the USGI green follower.
Thanks for your post! Yes, this issue has been known about here for some time and I (at least) have done a tutorial on the fix. But it wasn't stickied, so another one is never amiss!
Lancer AWM mags work without modification, FWIW.
Right now, my primary SCAR mags are D&H USGI-style aluminum mags with magpul followers. Work fine, but the lips bend up too damned easy. Will probably transition to the Lancer AWM mags (I've been having trouble with cracked feedlips on PMAGs).
Strongbow, you might want to try a Troy battlemag as well, mine are working great so far with the SCAR platform, no mods needed.

Ah! Sorry, I didn't mean to dupe you! I'm relatively new to SCARs and one of the guys at work showed me this. I couldn't believe something like this wasn't already stickied up top! Then again, I'm pretty new to the FN part of this forum!
It sure is easy to do, and since doing it, I haven't had any problems with my PMags or Lancers in my SCAR.
No worries. I meant it when I say that it's good to remind folks since it's not stickied.
Understood!
