I found some information on it here:

http://www.fnforum.net/how-to-fal-mags-to-scar17s-t26801.html

But I wanted to see if anyone here had done it.

So I guess I was a bad influence on the SCAR-17 Bob???

Modding FAL mags is something I might look into myself. I already have 3 SCAR mags but with the supply tight and me already having a buttload of FAL mags I might try it.

Yes, you are personally responsible as far as I am concerned!

Yes I did. I am in NY state and bought the rifle and had to get rid of the mag so I am on FNforum constantly and saw that mod. Yes it works. I did have the original mag to compare at first. They are the same, thats why I think FNH used the mags they already had from FALs in the SCAR 17s. I followed the step by step procedure he laid out. Only takes 5 minutes per mag. But I do have lots of tools for working with steel that most probably dont. I do have one that still here. I decided to have my lower bored out to get my SR-25 mags to fit. I just like being able to use one mag for both my SR-25 and SCAR-17s.

I am a little unclear where the feed lips need grinding off. Does he mean on the forward part where the projectile is, or towards the rear at the primer end?

You really need to just get an old metric fal mag and look for yourself. When you see them side by side you will be amazed. Then you can cut, grind, bend to make it exact. They are only $10 each so it was easy to buy one just for curiosity. And yes you do grind the front around the projectile. its too narrow the way they are made for the fal.

I did one.
It works.
I won't be doing another.
Took a lot of tweeking to get the feed lips right, and with the bending and metal removal I had to do, I'm not sure how long it will stand up to repeated use.
Bottom line is, I don't trust it, and would leave it at home if I thought I was going into harms way.
I think a much better solution is the Magpul PMag conversion.

Thanks guys, I have many FAL mags laying around and no FAL, so I am going to give it a try. I am mostly interested in getting the 10 round mag I have converted for hunting in the spring.

I'll try it on a 30 rounder first though.

I modified two thermold metric FAL mags successfully for my 17s. Third one I tried I was off by 0.5mm on the hole for the bolt catch lever, which prevented rounds from feeding properly so I tossed it. Overall it was $60 for the three thermolds new from thermold, and I got 2 working 17s mags for it, so I was happy given the state of gunbroker at the time.

Will the PMag's for the SR-25 work also?

Yes, They shoot perfectly at the fastest fire rate I can do with my finger.

Why bother? Cavalry Manufacturing will have a lower out soon that uses SR-25/P-mags

LMAO Yea Im going hold my breath for "will have a lower out soon". And how do you suggest I use the SCAR 17 untill they release this maybe, probably, might be thing? You cannot have any mags over 10 rounds that were made after sep.94' here. This mod was cheaper than trying to buy the 10 round SCAR mags, IF you can find them. Also you are taking a huge step backwards by adding the heavy aluminum lower to the SCAR. Yes its oz.s, but thats the whole gain of the SCAR, the light weight.

It sucks that you are limited in choices by your State laws....but I for one am anxiously awaiting this lower that will accept $15 Pmags with no significant modifications. I've managed to stock up a few FN 20's for my 17S, but more options is never a bad thing, especially in this current market where factory FN mags for 2x MSRP are a "steal"

YMMV

Well finally got them to the range, and of the two that would chamber rounds properly by hand, only one worked flawlessly when driven by the piston.

The other mag, upon re-measuring, slightly too low on the bolt catch, and it would only feed the rounds on the left side of the magazine automatically. I decided to just toss it.

That leaves me with 1 working 17s thermold mag for my investment, which I guess I'm chalking up to a learning experience since I spent $60 on the thermolds. That being said, I do have 2 mags and never paid crazy GB prices. =P
