How many unlinked, loaded 50bmg rounds does the standard GI issue ammo can hold?

150 easy, you can pack a few more in there if you're really trying... but 150 is the practical full volume.

150 rounds. If you put a thin cardboard paper between each layer like some do, the ammo can will hold 120 rounds. Stacked in layers there's 10 layers of 15 rounds each layer.

Let us not forget that, that many rounds are very heavy to carry around.

Get a MK19 can for 40mm.

You'll fit around 319 rounds in one of those.

I've got two cans filled like that.

Yes, they are heavy.

But not as heavy as my MK19 can loaded down with 45ACP, something like 36 boxes or the one filled 1/2 with 9mm and the other 1/2 with 22lr(almost a solid block of lead accounting for volume of bullet to brass/powder).

That would be weight-y. I loaded about 5k 5.56 rounds over the past few days.... Emptied my presses "done" bin into a 5 gallon bucket. It's full now. Giggles ensued when Mrs. OiRogers tried to move it.

Related note to the forums topic... How well / snugly do .50 rounds fit in the MK19 can? Stable enough to transport to the range? Or is there too much free space and possibility for damage?

It's almost as if it was a perfect fit. If you seat M2 or M33 to the cannelure you're going to get about a 1/8 inch space between the tip and the side of the can. If you alternate the directions of the tips, just like in a 50cal can, you should get a nice snug fit with the last round in the row fitting just about perfectly. The can dimensions for width between a 50cal can and a MK19 can appear to be identical, the MK19 is just longer/taller.

I used to have 2 cans of Wolf 223 Rem, filled it to about 1800 rounds each. I sold off one of the cans when I needed some money last year for closing costs on my house, 350 bucks for a MK19 can(plus a few extra boxes because I though the cans held 2200 rounds) loaded down to the brim the guy drove up from the Ontario California area to pick it up.

All told I've got around 8 of the MK19 cans. Years ago, used to be able to pick them up at a local surplus store in like new condition for around 18 bucks. Now you cannot even find 50Cal cans for 14-18 bucks.

Thanks for the feedback on MK19 cans, I knew they were similar... But was unaware of exact dimensions.

I must be lucky. A local surplus shop has .50 cans around 15$ per if you haggle.
I think they had some MK19 cans... Roadtrip tomorrow to find out.

My cans are all full and I've got about 7 gallons of 5.56 rounds that need homes.

Best price I ever got on 50Cal cans was at a gunshow.

5 almost brand new condition cans for 20 bucks. Yeah, 20 bucks. Last day of the show and I don't think the guy had any desire to pack them back up and haul them home. Wish I bought more but it was just my buddy and me, no hand truck, so we got all that we could manage to carry with just two hands.
