What is the point of a suppressor on the new Barrett .50?
They seem to be centering their next gen .50 around a suppressor. I'm just curious as to the reasoning. Adds 5 pounds of weight for what? .50 will still be booming loud, right? You're still going to have the supersonic crack, right? I'm just a tad confused as I believe they said it was due to military requests.
Ever shoot a M82 with a standard brake in a room?
I've seen vids, things tend to go flying. The new Barrett has a redesigned brake, which I thought was to help address that problem.
A suppressor can really take the bite out of the .50 noise wise and one of the issues with suppressing the M82 as I understand it has been timing. There's some decent youtube vids out there with bolt .50s suppressed to the point where the shot sounds like a loud cough. Even if the Barret suppressor knocked out 75% of the sound, it's still a big advantage, and adding 5lbs to a .50 is never a bad thing when it comes to shooting it. I suspect our resident Barret former employee will be along with better info shortly...
The overpressure from a .50 is a huge problem. It can mess with your head, damage objects nearby, and makes a huge visible signature.

I take it you haven't shot or been beside a 50 going off. Any sound and recoil reduction is a good thing
The only things I've experienced that have been close to a .50 in a building was standing on the starting line next to a NHRA Top Fuel dragster when the green came on and being in the climatic lab next to an F22 as the AB kicked in. It doesn't make you shit your pants but its weird how you can't focus for a second and your chest feels like it wants to cave in suddenly.
Behind a fifty I felt like I lost a half second of my life. I pulled the trigger and there was a muted noise and I was two inches back from where I started and I wasn't sure how.

Googling it, the barrets supposed to crank out 180 Db, which would be like that jet operating 3' away from your face for a split second.
I would be guessing that it would be partly .gov request and marketing. People have been asking for a Barrett brake that they could use that wouldn't void the factory warranty and the .gov probably asked them to look into it because of the wear and tear on the soldiers using the weapon.
I fired over 100k rounds in the 14 years I worked there and it took a toll on me. I imagine by now some soldiers and Marines must have complained about sinus problems or jaw bone weakness. I have those problems now. Firing the .50 so much was the worse thing I could have done.
But it is most likely marketing above all else. Give the people what they ask for, then charge them out the ass for it.
ETA: Yes, we played with a few can designs when I was there that you didn't need hearing protection with at all. The rifle had a funny "ping" when fired and you could hear the brass skip across the concrete floor of the shooting pad on the indoor range of Barretts. The can was pretty large, but very effective.
I have a can on my 50 and it takes all the blast away and makes it fun to shoot. (not that it's not fun with out it :) ) having it hearing safe is a huge benefit.

I like your rational. I have suppressors for almost everything but my Barrett. I would like to get one, but I don't think my current M82 is compatible with the new Barrett suppressor.
One that's worse is being 25' from a 200round burst out of an M61A1... there are few things close to that.

If they can make a suppressor for this
They can make one for those I bet.
WTF is that?!?! Looks like your penis has an enlarged prostate! Lol
Screw the silencer, where do I get a LOUDENER? That, and the attachment for shooting down police helicopters.

Even if it's booming loud with a suppressor... it's a whole lot better than booming loud + 30dB.

The story is they were getting alot of noise complaints near a fireing range in Germany so they made some suppressors to go on the tanks and howitzers.

They are making a kit to fit the new suppressor on the M82's... Its in their price list for introduction later this year..

How much is the retrofit kit?
Edit: Nevermind. I did some research and see that it will be available Q3 and the price is TBD.

I know. I actually put Barrett up for sale a couple days ago.
Knesek is getting the the first 100 M107A1's and they are supposed to come with the suppressor. If I can sell my M82, I will just pony up the extra cash and get the new rifle.
If anyone is interested in my M82 let me know. It's BNIB. I have a for sale ad in the EE.
FWIW, Barrett did make a handful of suppressors for the older M82s and M107s (IIRC, 13 or 14 of them), with heavier springs to be fit when the can was on the gun, to compensate for the loss of the brake. Looks like they put a lot of thought into how to make a more user friendly system.
As for shooting a suppressed .50,
A good friend of mine has an AR-50 with the AWC Turbodyne.
Outdoors it is fine to shoot without hearing protection. And that is shooting full power AP Rounds.
I can easily see the benefit to having a suppressor on a .50. The recoil goes up with the can vs the brake, but it is still entirely manageable, and it is sooooo quiet by comparison.
Borrowing a photo from the Picture thread linked above:
Here is the point of having a suppressor... You don't have a fish bowl of flying sh!t all around you after you squeeze the trigger.

Wow, I go the other way entirely. I think a .50 BMG is a perfect example of why one needs a suppressor.

Exactly. Barret will be getting an order when those conversion kits come out.

I saw your FS listing. I was wondering what was up. Looks like you did the same as I did. I sold mine a couple of months ago when I heard about the 107A1. But at least I shot mine before I sold it.

I second this.

I shoot my suppressed M82A1 without hearing protection....booyea

Any videos?
I cant take more than about 20 shots from my suppressed BA50 before I have to call it a day, it really ramps up the recoil to not have the brake. I guess the barrett would have less recoil though.

very key point. both audial and visual signature.

Do not shoot with mouth open.

But yeah, it's a big leafblower, so I would think a can would help.

Not a Barrett but my Swiss Nemesis with a reflex t16 can. (barrel is 27.5" long)
The noise reduction is amazing, reduces the boom to a high pitched whistle. I find that muzzle flip and felt recoil increases though when compared to the brake. (can weighs 7.5lbs)
I have shot it without ear-pro, the can gives a high pitched ring, although when on the firing point with other 50's it pays to be careful...

I always wondered about that. All the videos I have seen looks like it would knock the piss out of you.

Here is my 50 with a form 1 can. You can easily shoot it with out hearing pro. It makes it very enjoyable to shoot. Even crazy quiet with subsonics.

I've never fired a .50 cal weapon, nor have I been anywhere near one when it was being fired, but I am damn sure that every little helps when it comes to ear protection for all around.
I hate shooting with muffs; thus if I still had my 50 I'd spend $1500 for a silencer....it was the long-term goal anyway.

Is the ringing from the supersonic crack?

I would think it would be from the mount. Some have a tuneing fork effect.
