I want my 1st .50. What guns should I look at?

I'd like to keep it under $3500. I was looking at the Armalite AR50, the LAR Grizzly, AMAC and maybe the Barrett M99 if it is that much better than anything else. What are some pros and cons between these rifles? Is there another one i should consider? Should I just go the extra mile for the Barrett? I love their guns but if the AR and Grizzly are just as accurate... Thanks guys!

buy once cry once. You have to determine your level of need. I dont need one but If I did GAPrecision, TACOps, McMillan, BARRETT, CheyTac the list is short but spendy.
Personally I believe you would be far better off with a 338 Lapua its easier to grab it and run something that is too heavy limits mobility.

I see you didn't mention any of the UPPERs in your post. Do you not like the Uppers that can be attached to an AR-15 lower? Or are you not familiar with this option? Personally I will beat the drum for the Ferret-50 uppers. I have one with a 36" tube. And a Pelican 1750 case. Yes I have to break my rifle down upper/lower and take off the hand tightened brake. But I do like that big old gun. Dont plan to take it out in the woods, unless I am going to be sitting on a hill overlooking a large field.

On average the AR-50 should be a tad more accurate than an M99.

The AR50 may not fit in your safe without removing the butt stock, but it's easily removable. The rifle is 59.5" assembled, it wont fit in my safe in that configuration.

The M99 is lighter and shorter, it will fit in my safe fully assembled. I've been told the 32" barrel is the most accurate of the M99 variations.

I don't like shell holder designs like the LAR Griz. Just too funky to load compared to an AR50 or M99.

The AR-50 is a very nice package. Very well made. Very effective brake, not much more recoil than my .308 which has no brake. The muzzle blast on the other hand is impressive.

As in, knock everything off the table. As in, detach the retina's of innocent bystanders who wander too close to the brake. Think M1 Abrams. But I'm sure the Barrett brake is effective too.

I bought my AR-50 at Buds, best price I could find on the net'. I seriously considered an M99, but I decided to spend the $600 price difference on optics instead.

Now I have to decide between a US Optics ST-10 or ST-17, or just buying another Nightforce. I kinda dig the EREK knob though......

Good luck with your purchase no matter what you choose!

/if you go with an AR-50 check out Larry at Allied Precision Arms. He'll have the bipod, monopod, soft case, recoil pad quick adjuster, and the bipod cant lock extension waiting for you.

Edit:

Forgot to mention State Arms!

This... buy his trigger... and save yourself a thousand dollars to spend on ammo...but I am more fond of the 29" barrel...

Well, I think my 29" M99 is the tits......but that's just me. Compact enough to easily fit in my safe, yet still weighty enough to absorb recoil, great functioning brake, 27 minute rail, and quite handsome at the same time. Accuracy, though, I must admitremains to be seen. Although it only has to be just accurate enough to find the engine block or gas tank of any "Zombie" driven vehicles.

The thing I like about my Armalite is... it shoots so soft, I can focus more on shooting accurately, rather than having to worry about bracing myself for punishing recoil.

Out of the ones you posted... I was going to buy an AMAC but the guy selling it at the gun show wanted something like 5K for just the rifle so I passed. One of the guys that used to come out to the range had an AMAC, it shot MOA with match rounds. The trigger was okay but not adjustable and the comb on the stock sat a little to high for the rings that he had on the rifle for my liking. I'm sure it's something that could easily be fixed if it was my personal rifle so no big deal about that. The felt recoil was/is more then my AR-50 but nothing an extra recoil pad couldn't take care of.

The LAR Grizzly has the worst felt recoil out of the whole lot, their muzzle brake needs to go. If I owned one I would toss the stock one and get either an AR-50 brake or a fishgill type like the one on State Arms rifles. They will hold close to MOA with match ammo, two of the guys I shoot with can gets theirs close but MOA seems hard to get. I know they've upgraded their bolt design as the older ones used to have problems with hard extractions, if you buy a used one ask the owner if it's been sent back in to have it fixed. To me the Grizzly always seemed like an over engineered Maadi Griffin, which is a good thing unless you can build your own 50 BMG.

Between the M99 and the AR-50 theirs not much difference in accuracy and both will do MOA or better with match ammo. Where the AR-50 beats out the M99 is the fact that there's more after market stuff to put on it, one of those is a better trigger. Felt recoil is still less on the AR-50 then on the M99 and both companies have upgraded their muzzle brakes from the original design.

To put it in perspective as far as 50's go, they are ALL heavy even the light weight ones. They were never made to be stomping around in the woods hunting with, if you want to hunt with one, set it up in a blind like hunters do with smaller caliber rifles. If you think .338 LM is any better, price the rifles and ammo and you might have second thoughts about owning a 50 BMG. And when you see people comparing XYZ round to the 50 BMG, ask them if they're comparing their turned solids/match ammo to 50 BMG surplus or match ammo also. Funny how they always seem to leave that little fact out and that 50 BMG match grade ammo still holds a higher BC then whatever they're touting.

AMAC triggers are adjustable. The adjustable comb is solid rubber, so it can be shaved down quite a bit if need be. And of course, raised with the adjustment wheel. Unless later models changed, the base and rings are proprietary, so you are stuck with them. They are very robust.

Get the Barrett. It's unbelievably accurate with the proper glass and basic fundamentals. I'm happy I forked over the coin for my M99.
