I posted a thread a while back about getting a scope for my 50 and i was looking at a swfa just for starters but i never pulled the trigger on it because i knew i would just upgrade eventually. I originally was looking at getting a 5.5-20x50 nxs. My question is, would a 8-32x56 be to much scope for 500 yards? My closest range only has up to 500 yards right now but obviously i will be extending the range upwards of 1000 yards. What do you guys think?

Thanks

Personally I would go for the 5.5-22X56mm, it will do every thing you need it for and more.

Good Day,

The 5.5-22x has pretty much twice the internal adjustments of the 8-32x.... Go with the 5.5-22!!

Thanks

There is plenty of adjustment in either scope to shoot out past 1000 yards.

One of those scopes will allow you to see the target better.

To me -it's just that simple.

(and I've got a NF 12-42 on one of my 50's, and I like it just fine)

Rule of thumb is 1X for every 100 yards.

I would say that is a bare minimum.

I don't think ANYONE shooting 1000yd matches is using a 10X scope.

Just like racing: Ignore the ads for hotrod parts! Go into the pits at a race and see what the winners are running.
It's the same thing with shooting. Hit a match, I'd bet lunch everyone is using 22X and up.

If I was going to buy a U.S. Optics for my .50 it would be either the SN-3 T-PAL in 5-25x or the SN-9 3.8-22x as these are great scopes for any 50 BMG rifle. What you have to do is ask yourself "self, do I have the money for one". Either one is $1,000+ more then a Nightforce scope and NF scopes are great scopes to begin with. So, it comes down to what you want to spend on glass for your rifle and then rings to go with it.

If you go to a match you'll see that most guys run NF scopes as they preform extremely well on 50's, have plenty of MOA to get out to 1K yards, customer service is great... You'll see USO scopes at matches but not to the extent that you'll see NF and others, reason being is the price not the quality or options or customer service. Both scopes are great scopes and like I said, it comes down to personal choice and what you want to pay. BTW, there still isn't a scope made that the 50 hasn't put a hurt on, that includes both of these mentioned. While they might not see the shop as much as others, they still have been sent back to the shop needing repairs due to the pounding that the 50 puts on them over time.

I'd go with higher mag if you still have enough travel for the intended distance. Do you ever see needing to use your scope on 5.5 power, or will a low of 8 be enough?

Thanks for all the advice guys. I wish i could afford a USO but as of now NF is pushing the budget as it is. It looks like my choice will be the 5.5-22. Thanks guys. What are your preferences on recticles? I was looking at the MLR. Also, do i chose mil/mil or moa/moa? Ive done some reading on it but i still am confused.

Thanks guys

Had a U.S. optics SN-3 tpal for my first .50. It was built like a tank. I bought a nightforce for my second .50 and went about comparing the two. I now have two nightforces.

The glass was better on the nightforce(this was surprising to me and a major factor in the swapping of scopes), it was lighter, I didn't like the FFP as it took up too much of the target and was happy to get a SFP scope, It was built tuff (I do think my old U.S optics was a little more robust but what would have broke one would probably break the other) and when I sold the U.S. optics I bought my Nightforce 5.5-22X56 with Zero stop and still had enough left to get my TA-44 for my 300BLK.

Don't get me wrong U.S. optics is a great scope but I liked the Nightforce better and for the price difference that just made the decision easier.
