Only to 500?.....dang, guess I'll have to pass. Seems like a shame to limit it that short when the range capabilities are so much greater. Did they allow tracers?

I wonder if that would be waived if you could demostrate that your skills are good enough to hit the target from say 1000 yrds and then later say 1500 yrds and so on for 2000 yrds. Or do they not want civvies that can kick their military butts?

That would be extremely short-sighted of them.

Many of the advances in long range shooting, that they employ today, are directly from civillian development.

For example: Some crazy kid named Ronnie wanted a toy, and the military got the M82A1

Good question.....not really sure why they won't. Perhaps ML128 could shed some light? They sure wouldn't have to worry much about my new skills, although ringing steel at 500 with a .50 is pretty much a lay up.

While waiting for ML128 response.

Here is my thinking. I belong to a private club here in MO. We have a 600 yrd range and some shorter ones too. Well you would be surprised after all of the newsletters talking about the dangers of bullets that hit the ground and not the backstop/berm. We have been having troubles still. So, the club prez and BOD put a NO SHOOTING on the 300 and 600 yrd lanes till one was proven to be qualified to shoot and hit the target. But you had to demonstrate that you know the ballistics of your round. So, this also meant that you had to know the FPS of your round and the BC of your round. Thus the number of clicks for your scope for the given drop from one distance to another. There have been a good number of people who did not pass the test. I heard a few even showed up with scope mounted slewed to the rifle bore, some had not even been bore sighted yet. So, I can understand the guys at the military range not letting people on the 2000 yrd range right off. But wonder if that would change once someone has proven that they got their act together.

There is an excellent private club out here named "Tac-Pro".
After years of problems they now have a similar policy.

I was at the last one.

Targets went out to 500 yards.

Its was mostly just a free for all ran by the MWR,

Be sure to call or write up a suggestion on ICE if you want any changes. I suggested that they switch to one of the pop up ranges with a 25m zero range. Small Arms charlie is good out to 300m for popups. not so .50 friendly though.

ok so the reason we didn't shoot farther was the fact that the range safty wasn't prepared to do so. i will try and get them to open the range up but to do so all of you that can needs to go to ft stewart web page and post an "ICE" message saying how awesome the last shoot was and and you want to shoot farther distances. the ice report is the best way.
