Leupold Mark 4 question
Looking for a scope for my .50. I have narrowed it down to a Leupold 4.5-14-50mm. My question, however, is it seems the 40mm can be had for a good bit cheaper. Would you guys purchse the 40mm if you could save $300 or so? I was thinking about a super sniper but they aren't variable correct? If I say get a 16x...then its always on 16 power. Im going to pull the trigger on a scope in the next few days and would appreciate any feedback. Thanks guys!
I have the Mark 4 4.5-14x50 on a bolt gun and its a nice scope. I did however go with a NF 5.5-22x56 on my AR50. I wanted better glass and more eye relief. I would go with the 50mm objective not only for better light gathering but also a larger exit pupil. ( objective ÷power) Scopes are like gun safes, buy the best you can afford.
if your going to shot @ 1,000 yards + then the 40mm give you plenty field of view
if your going to shot short range go with the 50mm
I've shot 40, 50, and 56mm objective scopes in 50's.
I seem to have better luck/longer life with one with a stout small body.
A fixed power 40mm Mark4 would probably last the longest
(they all will eventually break Nightforce, Loopy, any of 'em...)
All else being equal the bigger the glass the easier/brighter the picture is.
Lower power usually = longer eye relief
Not as important on an AR-50 as an 18" Bohica with a skeleton stock!
What gun?...
Personally, I would spend the $300, but weigh all the factors.
The gun is a E.D.M. model 50. I probably will never shoot past 1,000 yrds so was wondering if the 40mm would work good? Just wanting to see what all my options are.

It should do just fine.
I run that scope on my AR-15 and have no problems reaching out with it.
The bonus is if you find, as your shooting develops, that you are scope limited
the Loopy MK4 will hold it's value. You can sell/trade for whatever new optics you want.

Dude, if you've got the coin to pickup an EDM, don't skrimp on a Leupold. Get a Nightforce. 5.5-22x56mm that is either MIL/MIL or MOA/MOA based upon what you are used to.

I agree with Dave, get the best glass that you can afford and you'll be extremely happy in the long run.
Have a Leupold Mk4 4.5x14 by 50 and Nightforce 5.5x22 by 56, the Nightforce is a better scope but the Leupold Mk4 is not bad but if you were not going to shoot farther than a 1000 yards, one of the Leupold Mk4 6.5x20 might be an interesting option (make sure you get the long range Mk4 that has a nominal 100 MOA vertical adjustments). If you just needed a scope for part of a year, then the $300 SS would work, but not as clear (have not looked at the newer $800 SS). If you are not going to shoot at moving targets and/or close range (i.e. this side of a 100 yards, one can get by ok with a fix sixteen power.
