How strong is the Spyderco Delica?

Let me start off by saying, I know if you are going to do serious cutting/work then use a fixed blade.

But I carry a Delica 4 and would like to know it's limitations so I don't hurt myself. It uses:

VG10 steel
FRN handles (they don't inspire confidence like G10, but I stand to be corrected )
Nested liners
Holds open using a back lock.

What would fail first in an extreme case, the lock? the handles? Using the 'cutoff a car roof scenario' ( commonly used for Strider knives) how would it hold up?

If I put my weight into it would I break it?

First failure depends on how you're using it. I'd think the blade would fail first, as you'd probably be prying (in some fashion). I'm not too worried about the lock failing.

It would fail miserably in "cutting off the car roof" use.

ETA: That being said, I've carried one for about 7 years now and it's (for me) just about the perfect pocket folder. Big enough to get the job done, well made, very thin.

Is the lock good? I keep reading that the best locks are the ball bearing locks or the compression locks are the strongest.

ETA: BTW my Delica is the combo edge and Saber ground not FFG.

Delica is a good blade.

When you are using ANY folder, keep in mind that the blades tend to be thinner, they are NOT full tang (so the joint is usually the weakest point, ESP in a plastic handled knife), and they are NOT designed for heavy cutting work.

I carry a RAT3 daily, and that knife is a fucking tank for its size. Legal to carry in CO too, due to the knife laws (check your own).

When I first got it, there was a curve in getting used to carrying a fixed blade that is about the length of a 4in, but only a 3.25 or something sharpened length (choil is pretty big).

I wasn't sure about it, the handle design seemed.....plain and not very grippy............but I have to say that I use my esee almost exclusively now, even though I carry a benchmade griptillian and a trigonaut (all daily)

The lock is fine for it's intended use, which is NOT hacking your way out of a burning car/airplane. Are there stronger locks out there? No doubt (AXIS comes to mind). Will the lock fail? Not if you're not abusing the knife.

If you need something to hack your way out, get a fixed blade.

Thanks, I know it is a brilliant little knife and sold me on Spyderco as a brand.

That being said I am looking at small fixed blades for an EDC now, I don't think any folder can hold up to much abuse in an Emergency smash, pry, stab situation.
