Wow, just got off the phone with ATI customer service, I had lost the LITTLE orange plug that goes into the barrel chamber so the hammer can be decocked. The part was only $1.95 but then they wanted $10 to ship I had to say no thank you. I had wanted to get a couple of them but man that's alot to ship. I would think a little envelope would be fine. I know that USPS has even has those prepaid boxes and even for the medium sized one was only $5. USPS even has a smalI envelope that only cost a couple of bucks

Weeeeeellll... shiping costs also cover the labor to ship. So, whatever they feel the appropriate charge is, is what they will charge.

But yeah, thats a bit steep.

They are probably sending it in a flat rate box/envelope. Any time I am in need of a small part and shipping is that way, I just use it as an excuse to order A Lot of small stuff. Shipping will be the same and you get small parts for other projects.

I thought this was going to be a thread on Midway.

I hate companies that try to make money on shipping.

I had always thought the same thing when I get shipping quotes like the one I got from ATI for so small of parts that can literaly fit in a envelope. I wonder if they report this added amount in their profits? Think about it , for example, the parts I wanted totaled $3.90, they wanted $10 to ship, Let's just say they used a USPS envelope and even had the item weighed, at most for a pre priced envelope $2.00. That means they made $8.00 in profit just on shipping alone. Even if they are reporting to IRS as the $10, they are still only paying less then that for actual shipping. I tell you I would like to think in todays economy that companies like ATI would use the least expensive shipping company and then foward those saving onto their customers. I guess this is not the case. Left a bad taste in my mouth since this was the first time I even had to contact ATI for anything.

That $1.95 part probably cost them $1.50 to stock. Guessing the operator earns $15/hr and it takes 3 minutes on the phone with you alone, By the time they just take your order, they're already in the hole 30 cents for just taking your order. Not to mention someone will need to pull your item, package it up and set the postage. All labor costs. It also costs money to pay the rent on the shop, keep the lights on, pay the credit card machine people, and pay the phone company for keeping the phone line hot.
They could just sell that $1.95 part for $20
...just sayin.

A friend of mine was charged $10 for shipping... he'd ordered an APRON! HOW much does a shop apron weigh?

Turns out Mc Master Carr included a 300-page catalog with the apron! THAT was what he was paying for!

I hear what your saying and I would agree with you on the things the shop has to pay for like overhead and did not consider that. But while I was searching for another supplier for the part I was looking for, a member of another forum I am apart of (INGO) told me about doing this..Going to Lowes now for it. Audie Murphy on INGO,Your so cool..

Probably can only use UPS or Fedex
If I shipped a fart to you, it will be $10. Doesn't matter.

Sorry but due to "enhanced rules for fraud prevention" on taking credit cards most everything has to go with a tracking number. Priority mail delivery confirm numbers do not satisfy credit card companies requirements for fraud prevention. Or else retailers get burned repeatedly.

Now if you paid $10 and it came in a 60 cent envelop, then I'd be pissed.

I had to buy a bolt hold open spring from them. First class envelope and they still changed enough for Priority mail.

I hate to be the bad guy here but....business owner and college business teacher. Had my students do a fact based study on how much it cost to answer the phone and actually sell the proverbial $2 part, with actual time to do billing, pulling, packing, etc. They fell over when the actual cost was figured out. As they learned the overhead for that $2 part is the same as it is for a $200 part. Short of it is, they lose their butts on $2 parts.

I don't like it either but its a fact of being in business. Its that darn Overhead thing...gets you every time. Some companies eat it, some can't afford to. Its their call. I avoid small orders if I can and try to get enough stuff to make it worthwhile.
