hk91 g3 handguard mod questions and other advice for new owner please
Hello all, i am the very happy new owner of a July built GSG 522!
I work with my dad and a couple days ago he asked me if i wanted to go for a ride, i said sure assuming we were going to a job site or to pick up supplies. As it turned out he took me to his favorite gun store. After looking around a bit he pointed out a gsg pistol in a case, i had point out a mp5 clone last gun show we went to commenting how cool i thought it was and to be a .22 cheap to shoot. i looked the pistol over and have to admit i was smitten, very hefty and solid feeling. We looked at a .22 S&W but it was so lightweight it felt like a toy, i don't know if the upper was plastic or maybe aluminum but it did not inspire confidence.
The shop owner mentioned he had just gotten a GSG 522 rifle in that day and we asked to see it. My dad asked me if i wanted it for my 23rd birthday coming up this week and i assured him he didn't need to get me anything at all. He insisted he want to and i said that would be great and i would really appreciate it. He got me the gun and i thanked him as many ways as i knew how.
Went and shot it yesterday and it was too much fun, no kick at all so he has fun with it too. He never really enjoyed shooting an AR i had years ago, and the amo is so much more expensive. . . i foresee the range being a hobby again now that i can get a box of 500 .22 for $20
so here is where i need your help, i have the compulsion to modify anything i plan to use a lot and i picked out a few things but am unsure of the best place to purchase, i'll post links to what i have and maybe you can tell me where you would buy it? some help for the newb would be much appreciated.
first off is the hk91 g3 style stock
i know the cocking tube has to be lengthened, can most any gunsmith do that for me? i can break down and re-assemble with new parts but i don't have tools to modify. love the look of that handgaurd though. is there anything else that needs to be done for this modification? i see a little flash suppressor but have no idea what kind to get, does that need a thread chuck for the forearm as well?
any other parts needed?
next i want to put a B&T style folding stock on it
i am going to do the screw and push pin upgrades immediately, along with the mp5 origional round right retrofit kit since mine is a post lawsuit gun, and i like the round ones.
the grip, the sight retro fit kit i am getting is only 20 bucks and comes with the classic gsg 5 smooth mp5 style grip. i like these and i am sure i will leave it on for a while since it's one less thing to buy, but i do like this pictured grip bellow and have not found it for sale but see them a lot in searches
if i could get one for less than 30 that would be a winner, also i have seen some H&K steel grips, should i try to modify one or stick with plastic?
links to parts i found, maybe you can help me build this cheaper?
gsg 522 to classic conversion kit, 20 piece: $20

Cocking tube buffer, i guess i need the gen 2 (middle pictured in link) for my gun? less than $20
http://rrages.com/buffer/index.htm
H&K push pins, $8

screw upgrade kit, $15

B&T style folding stock, $90 but worth the money? i want a nice solid, quality stock

i am having trouble finding anything but real H&K91 g3 handguards, would that work? is it worth spending the money on or do you know where to get a quality part for cheaper?

http://www.robertrtg.com/g3.html
some in there for less than 100 without the bipod, but when i don't see the bipod for less than 100 either so. . .
i am really excited about making this gun mine and can't thank my dad enough, i am looking forward to going shooting with him more again and now i don't have to go broke on amo to do it.
any other tips or advice aside from sourcing info would be great.
Thanks for reading
do you like the quality of your arisoft hk91 handguard? that is the model i want but if i can avoid the pricetag of a real H&K one that would be great.
also, what brand and size flash suppressor is that you have? looks to be the perfect legth
maybe this is a dumb question but rather than moving the cocking lever assembly forward and extending it's throw length could i leave the lever where it is, and put the same length tube forward of the cocking mechanism out to the front sight? i would imagine the cap that is in the end of that tube now could be replaced with a solid washer plug or a slug welded in then the tube could run to the front sight with the factory plug replaced there.
am i not comprehending something about how this gun work, could i do that so i could keep the mechanism factory?
if not what else needs to be replaced, i see that rod but don't know where to buy or what make or model.
thanks for your help, i really appreciate it. that is by far my favorite gsg i have seen yet
also is that the nc star scope? for $40 off ebay i can't hardly beat it if it's even half decent
well, the cocking tube assy is one big piece, so you would have to hack it apart to make it work. the way we did it doenst alter any original parts. not worth all of that. I just used brass heater pipe and cut it to fit. it's just do-it-yourself kinda tinkering stuff.
the NC star reflex is awesome with .22's. I love it
the 3-lug is from swarfworks, VERY good stuff and has threads at the end that are covered in the pic.
ah i think i understand, would a stiffer or longer spring do the trick then? i just wanted to keep all the internals stock but i think i had it sort of backwards. i was think you could leave the locking tube and lever where it was and add a pipe in front of it that did nothing but fill the space from the end of the real cocking tube to the sight over the end of the barrel. if you say your way is easier i'll take your word for it.
so i need this, http://swarfworks.com/gsg5-p3.php
what flash suppressor can i use with that end?
also i see a rod looking bit in your pics that look sort of like a firing pin? not sure what is is but i take it that is a a replacement part for the mod, could you alleviate me of my ignorance please?
(edit) is that rod what goes between the barrel and the the tube? if so it a hk91 g3 part or what is it and where can i pick one up at?
been looking for the airsoft g3 handguard and still can not find one, found the bipod for it for $30 though. could you be so kind as to tell me where you got yours so i don't have to shell out over $100 for the guard with no bipod.
know i'm asking a lot. . . thank you for your help
everything used is custom. u literally need to find some metal and cut a section off and fit it.
i got the handguard/bipod for free from an airsoft dealer that I have personally known since 2001. I get all kinda of little things (like my lower trigger housing shell) for free. they yank em off broken guns that are trashed.
would you be interested in selling me a "bracket rod", cocking tube extension or g3 handguard? if not i will go to a gunsmith but it would be fun to do it myself.
what flash suppressor works with that triple chuck you used on the barrel end?
heres a TM /bipod for $70

the 3lug is the endcap. u can use the stock flash supressor tip instead if u want. theres not much flash from a .22lr tho.
imgonna keep my handguard. If i had a cnc mill I could have parts made, but im kinda busy to do that. I'd love to have a GSG-91 retrofit kit but i already have enough stuff with my other hobbies...
oh i didn't expect you to want to get rid of your handguard

but brand name helped hugely, i found some on a couple sites with that info (sold out in link)
the pictures look pretty straight forward, is there any tips or tricks that you would have for a gunsmith to make me that bracket bar and tube that wouldn't be discernible from the pictures?
very excited about this build

when u attatch the rod u need to secure it with the receiver screws. some have more than others (2 vs 3). its pretty simple. once u get the correct rod length u can hang the rest of the front group off of that. u will need an inner section to push back the bolt with the cocking lever. basically the cocking lever needs to be extended inside the tube .
u could also take it to Red Jacket Firearms and they could weld 2 more GSG-5's to yours and make a gattling GSG as well LOL. joking, dont go there hahaha
when you use the pictured flash suppressor, can you see the barrel through the openings? i assumed a 14mm thread size suppressor?
do you think a g3 hk91 cocking lever spring would work as i would imagine it is the right length and tension? have you had any reliability issues with the stretched spring?
also do you have any pics or could you give me a description of the cocking lever extension?
just won an auction for the g3 handguard with bi-pod. pretty excited
going to order the screws, H&K push pins and retro fit kit next week and the folding stock might have to wait til after christmas
put 700 or so rounds through this gun so far and it really is a lot of fun, great gun anyone can pick up and shoot
i'm liking that flash suppressor, could you clue me in on where to pick one up at?
The flash supressor is off a gsg-5p, the pistol version of gsg-5. It screws into the same spot the 3-lug adapter is in in the pictures. On your gun the faux supressor screws in there. I got the 3-lug adapter from gemtech for my 5p, if you want my flash supressor email me, I don't plan on using it, it is still in new condition, let you have it cheap.
These look great! If GSG was smart, they'd make a .22LR "G3" - given that they have already done all the heavy lifting with their basic GSG5 design.
And if they were SMARTER - they'd engineer a .22LR drop-in conversion kit for the HK93/V93/C93s. There are tons of these guns out there on the market. Sell like bacon on a stick.
Thanks NC, you just saved me a bunch of time making a shopping list.
Joe
ha i agree mac, and no problem joe. glad you all are enjoying your rifles as much as i am.
to add to the shopping list, anyone know where i can pick up a HK style rear drum sight with the ghost ring? swear i saw them but cant find them for sale again
I'm assuming you've checked out the rrages website? he has a ton of cool stuff for the GSG.
FWIW I didn't buy rrages HK handguard, but bought two of the longer pieces from the roberts website. I cut them down, and fitted them to my GSG. they were green and I painted them black.
do yourself a favor, just save and buck up the $70 for the rrages one.
i'll be doing that shortly...
