Other than the "feel", how do you know when your taper crimp is sufficient?

Take a loaded round and push it as hard as you can against your bench. If it doesn't move then it is sufficient, any more is not needed.

your suppose to measure the lower part of the shell to determine what normal is and then measure the mouth of the couse after you load a round in it. It's suppose to be .005-.01 less than the bottom part of the case. This gives you an idea of how much crimp you need or not.

The taper crimp is to remove the bell in the case mouth, not crimp the case into the bullet. If the case mouth is crimped to the same diameter as the case around the bullet slightly below where the belling was, it is sufficient. Taper crimping will not hold the bullet tighter than before it was crimped, unless you way over taper crimp and deform the bullet.

What cartridge? The taper crimp is only to remove the flare plus, it is not used to secure the bullet.. Measure the case mouth, the 45 acp for example should measure .469-.471. I crimp my 45's at .471.

Looking at SAAMI drawings, show the 40 s&w with a taper crimp of .0001" The 45 acp is .0002" These amounts are almost impossible to measure. The taper crimp is only to remove the flare plus, it is not used to secure the bullet as PePe & Steve said. At times a little extra taper is needed for the round to feed & chamber correctly. Case length also has an effect on the crimp. Setting the die to work with the shortest bass is best. SAAMI And Photo Albums

I use a case gauge to set my crimp. With lead bullets in 45 ACP my crimp is usually .472-.473 measured after it drops into a case gauge. I do not crimp 9mm anymore since I got a case gauge since they all just drop right in.I have had zero issues with chambering rounds since I have started setting my crimp this way.

I'm loading mainly ,45 ACP at the moment but plan to also load 9mm, .357 ,,44 mag and others in time. I appreciate all the advice. I think I was crimping a bit tight.

357 and 44 are "Roll" crimp, different animal.

For the .45 get the ol' calipers out and measure case walls and add that to bullet measurement. That resulting sum should be right at what the finished taper crimp should measure. I adjusted my taper crimp die down bit by bit until it was spot-on then pulled a few to make sure the bullet showed no deformation. Test fit in your barrel or gauge and call it good.....

For me, I taper crimp just enough to remove the flare. The tension in the case is supposed to hold the bullet in place, and not the crimp.
