My SIL wants me to reload him some .280 rounds for practice and deer hunting. Anything special I need to know for this round? I reload .270 & .308 for deer for myself. Recommended powder? I use a lot of Varget.

I've been loading for a Ruger .280 for quite a few years now. I use IMR4350 for 140 gr. bullets and IMR4831 for 160 gr. bullets. If you plan on loading a light-ish load for your SIL, you might want to back off to something a little faster burning like one of the 4895's. It shouldn't be much different than loading for you .270.

First thing you need to know is that factory loads are slow for a reason. The reason is this round was introduced in pump action and semi rifles not bolt guns. The pressure was lower to ensure extraction.

For MY bolt action I shoot Nosler 150 BT's over healthy dose of Reloader 19. These average 2734 FPS out of a 21" barrel. There are lots of great 7mm bullets to choose from and you can play with endless combinations of powders and projectiles in this very under rated caliber.

Can't help ya with Varget.

Thanks guys. I don't have to use Varget, I just happen to use it alot in 5.56 & 7.62 for my ARs. I agreed to reload 100 for him, for right now. He's going to repay me for all the components, dies, brass, bullets and powder.
