Thanks

My reloading has been sporadic over the last couple of years and I feel like I am still a beginner.

These primers are over 7 years old. To give you an idea how old they are, the price on the box is $18.

I believe thats approaching high pressure.

slightly hot but still fine. I have a box of winchester primers for large pistol that I bought in 1971 still work great

A little on the warm side, but not excessively hot. Still see nice radius on most.

I wouldn't go any hotter, that's for sure. One of the five in each type of load is very flat. You need some headroom (margin of safety) in case you load using an anomalously heavy case, 3 sigma powder charge, etc. I've seen worse but worse is bad.

24.0 gr of Varget with a mag length seated 77 SMK is probably compressed (crunching and cracking kernels) as it stands.

I voted not high pressure although I think reading primers is on par with reading tea leaves. I still look at em, but they don't tell you much unless they are really bad.

I need to get a chrono to help work up loads.

24.0gr isnt too hot of a load for me. But I mainly have used that in LC brass. I will see what mine look like in commercial brass.

You are right at the edge of high pressure, I wouldn't increase the powder charge.

I hate polls. I especially hate hastily, poorly thought out polls.

Why are the choices black and white? Where are the various shades of gray?

Given the choices above, I vote "none of the above". Oh, that choice is not available, either.

No high pressure signs on any of those but I would stop there if they shoot well, they are probably at book max but not as hot as factory NATO ammo.

yeah, yeah

I usually think out my polls pretty well and I didn't think about "close to overpressure".

Oh well, I received the advice I was looking for.

I have some that old and mine are all goldish in color.

Other brand SR primers flatten sooner than #41's in my experience, YMMV.

Yes, I think the posts were spot-on.

One of those primers is showing flattening and cratering, the others look fine.

Top picture, second primer from the bottom looks a little over pressured to me. Everything else looks ok.

How much headspace was there for these reloads?

Were the primers all seated the same depth below flush?

The cartridges are AR mag length, 2.260" and the chamber is NATO 5.56 chamber.

As best as I can say, the primers were all seated flush. That is not to say that one pocket wasn't as clean as it should have been and the primer didn't seat as deep. They were primed in a RCBS press with the priming attachment, so they seated enough to clear the case holder.

This is what I was thinking. I loaded up some 68 grains w Varget and about 24 grains and it was very close to compressing.

3rd picture, first 3 rounds... Is that copper shavings upon seating?

Yes.

I had sent this brass out to be commercially reprocessed here http://www.custombrassprocessing.com/

After I noticed the shavings on the first couple of rounds, I hand chamfered the brass and it stopped. The rounds I shot didn't have that problem.
