I am currently in the market for a .22 rifle and/or bull pup. I stumbled across the Walther G22 while browsing through a few sites. It seems to fit what I'm looking for. Does anyone own one or have fired one before? Any comments on it (pros/cons)?

I had one and sold it. It was reasonably accurate, but other than being ugly as sin, it had a very spongy trigger pull and was a pain in the ass to dis-assemble and re-assemble.

They have a fairly bad reputation in Britain. Just about everything in the design seemed to be unpopular with owners. This rifle has served me fairly well as a bullpup .22LR. It isn't something that will run dirty, and they aren't very common, but it works quite well.

You've gone and brought up the red-haired step child of the Bullpup Brotherhood. Bullpups that will never be imported or cost more than two new trucks get more chatter than the G22 which you can pick up at the corner gun store. I got mine for $300 when they included a hard and a soft case. I'm wouldn't pay the $400 you see them for now. It's not bad but it has a lot a flaws for the amount of engineering that went into it. In typical pup fashion the trigger sucks. I read you can stiffen up the transfer bar by adding epoxy or something but I haven't had the time to try it yet.

It's not a bullpup, but I have a Beretta U22 NEOS pistol for which I've purchased a Beretta factory carbine kit. It's just as short as my AXR (AUG clone) and it's by far the funnest gun I own.

Bonus, you can always go back to a pistol configuration.

Yea, that's what kept me from buying one a while back when I was sorta interested

Mine was given to me for free, in a pile of pieces, because the previous owner couldn't put it back together again.

Previous owner is also my car mechanic.

In general, it's a vaguely serviceable .22LR with a bad trigger and mediocre sights. Fun to plink with, but not much more. If you tighten the stock screw too far in, the magazines can't be inserted or removed. If you disassemble the receiver for cleaning, two springs will fly off the side of the action into never-neverland. It has a completely unnecessary magazine safety, which I subverted as a matter of necessity (see above about evaporating nano-springs) with a piece of scotch tape. The ejector plate snapped in half on mine, but since the receiver shell holds it in place just fine, I haven't bothered to get a replacement.

If you're a bullpup completionist, pick one up. If you want a heavy-duty .22 plinker, get a 10/22. If you just want something different and cool, go ahead and buy one...but remember you've been notified.

My understanding is that it does NOT use the same magazine as the G22 pistol. That is the main reason I never bought one. (If I'm wrong about that please tell me and I will buy one tomorrow. )

Technically, I'm fairly certain it uses the same magazine body...but the floorplate is completely different. It might be possible to fit a G22 mag into a P22, but it's definitely not possible to do the reverse.

That's what I had always been told –– different floorplates, not cross-compatible (which is what I would want).
