Shipping Handguns USPS Priority - What's Needed?

Our store needs to ship some handguns for online sales, FFL to FFL. Our local post office wasn't helpful, nor was any other post office within 100 miles. We called a USPS hot-line, and they sent us back to our local post office....

So how do you ship a handgun via Priority mail? I found This Form. Do I complete 1 for each firearm I ship? Do I take it to the local post office and ship it, or can I give it to our mail-man who picks up daily? Does the package need to be marked or anything declared, or does my local post office just keep that form for themselves?

I would appreciate any advice on how to handle this. Thanks.

I fill out one form for each shipment, I used to fill out one for each firearm. Make sure the address on the form matches the label. No special markings are needed or wanted on the package. I always take mine to the PO and they stamp and sign the form and they keep it.

From time to time, you will get a clerk who does not know anything about the ability for an FFL to mail a handgun, so just refer them to DMM 601 Mailability 11.1.6, I used to keep a copy of this with me also, but have trained most of the regular clerks at my PO.

1. Put handgun in Priority Mail box
2. Print out shipping label for postage/insurance/confirmation at usps.com
3. Tape label to box
4. Fill out Form 1508 with the name and address of the dealer or manufacturer you are shipping to.
5. Hand both to postal clerk
6. Enjoy the WTF look on the clerks face as he tries to invent a reason that shipping a handgun is unpossible.
7. Smugly hand him this: http://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/601.htm#wp1198527 Just be smug, no need to laugh and point at his befuddlement.

And yes, you need to fill out the 1508 for every handgun shipment.

You can put multiple boxes on one form 1508, some times I get them back from the clerk. I just do as the form says and save for a year (or until the package arrives ) and then throw them away.
Do get ready to explain to the clerk that it is legal, if they actually look at the title on the form.

Um, the post office is supposed to keep the forms. Our guy didn't realize that for a few months, and had been dumping them in the trash at the end of the day. Oops...

We have our own special folder at the local Post Office, of course we are the only dealer that goes there.

Just like everyone stated. The first time I went the clerk was new and didn't know what to do so she got her supervisor who told her what to do. No problem. The next time I went there was a few other poeple in the post office at the time, I handed her the box and paperwork and she LOUDLY says "oh you are the gun guy right?". Needless to say everyone looked at me. Now she has seen me enough to doesn't let everyone know I'm there.

I have a question. My local post office is GTG. what I want to know is what if I go out of town to a gun show or something and I get an order for something I have with me. can i just go to any post office and ship it out, or would it be a problem that my FFL address is out of the area. Seems like it would not make any difference, but wondering if anyone has done this before?

What I do is have a copy of my FFL on one side and the 1508 on the other. You only need to fill out one 1508 for each address you ship to. Box it up, fill out the form and your good-to-go.

Why?
ATF doesn't want us handing out FFL copies to those that don't require them.

Sometimes it's just easier to flash it at them.

Just an update for everyone, I did get the gun shipped out, for about 1/2 of what UPS would charge for 2nd Day Air.

The postmaster did make 1 phone call to someone above him to confirm the rules on shipping a handgun, but it was fairly painless, and he said he would be ready for me next time. Thanks for the help everyone.

Flash? It's not "flashing if it's printed on the back of the 1508 that he's giving them.
While it might make it easier for you, it certainly makes it more difficult for anyone else that tries to mail a firearm.

You can mail 100,000,000 handguns on the same form 1508 if they are being mailed at the same time. The form states "AddressES on ParcelS (Use reverse side or attach additional blank sheets if more space is required)" empasis added.

Dumb bitch at my local post office refuses to mail handguns, unprimed brass, components bullets, AR uppers, BB's anything but a letter basically without approval from higher up even if you can show her the regs in black and white.

I always have to get her supervisor to tell her what the regulations are, and that the goods I am shipping are allowable.

You would think as many times as I have proved that stupid cunt wrong she would just take my word for it from now on.

Sold 2,000 9mm brass to a guy across the state. Shipped them out the next day to him. Told dumb bitch that it was inert unprimed brass.

Postmaster calls in 2 days and says, " I have a package here that you tried to mail the other day, (dumb bitch) says that it is full of 9mm shells and you can't ship live ammo through the postal service."

I was like WTF I told that guy he would have his shit yesterday and you are telling me that it is still at the post office in MY town!

I told her it was unprimed brass, and she said OK and sent it on through. Dumb bitch had held it for 2 days until the postmaster got back from vacation so she could ask her if it was OK.

So...........................how does this "dumb bitch" know what you are mailing?
Rule 1 is if they have no legal requirement to be notified what the box contains DON'T TELL THEM!
Rule 2 is pay & print your own postage at home, drop off box at post office and minimize your contact with the counter clerk.

The only thing dumber than a dumb postal clerk is a dummy who makes trouble for himself.
