Found a Sig 556R with the factory improvements for $999 locally (pics)

Down at a local shop they had 2 on the wall with the factory fixes (steel mag shelf, better spring). Took it home, swapped out the hand guard, stock, pistol grip, muzzle device and optic and dropped a foam chunk between the receivers to clean up the wiggle. Here it is with the rest of the green team...

Very nice. I don't know what the improvements are, but have you seen this?

Yep, Sig will actually do that for free under warranty for those who got earlier 556R's. The improvements are that steel mag ledge insert, the upgraded hammer spring (to solve issues with not striking steel cased ammo hard enough) and a wider ejection port so cases don't occasionally get caught in the port on ejection.

I didn't know that. Should I come across one, I know what to look for!

Sig's factory steel mag ledge insert is a little more subtle than the one advertised on gunbroker. The factory piece looks smaller and very well integrated. There are the two shiny screws there though just like the one on gunbroker.

Accomplice, have you had an opportunity to fire your 556R yet? I know the "old" 556R had issues, but I am eager to see if the fixes SIG made have ironed out the bugs in this weapon.

I have not fired it yet. I'm betting on it working great as I'm selling my other two 556's to stick with the 556R for now. My first one was great but the issues made it ammo sensitive from what other owners were saying. My first one had a couple of spent cases get caught by the charging handle on the way out. So the bigger ejection port on the new gun should cure that.

I'm waiting to hear as well. I want one but they are still hard to find.

I've had mine (one of the updated 556r's) for a few months now but havn't fired it enough to give a detailed impression. I'm right at 500 rounds of a mix of Herters and Golden Bear the only issues with it so far have been mag related with us palm mags which take some fitting, the gun has been flawless so far but I know it is still a fairly low round count

Gents,

A question, having read about the "fix' on the 556R that Sig is doing to the older models. I read somewhere else (cant remember where)
that Sig might be in the process of doing a 're-engineering' of that lower makes me wonder if they are about to just discontinue the
rifle.

Not trying to start a s...t storm.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Art

*edit* there is a thread over on the Sig 556 site-thats where I read the possible re-engineering**

I think it was probably my post that suggested the re-engineering. I was getting that from some comments 556R owners made after they talked to Sig reps. Who really knows? They may just shelve the project completely or start cranking out the older version with the fixes again.

sig has had my 556R for over 3 months now. called at the 5 weeks point which is what the orginal email said the max wait should be. told they were waiting on parts. called again 4 weeks ago. said parts should be in anyday, didnt want to give a date because the parts had not come in but gave me a rough estimate of 3 weeks. no problem. called again after 3 weeks (1 week ago) and was put on hold for about 2 minutes. guy came back and said the parts had just come in and it should go out at the end of the year, and if i didnt want to wait anymore they could just send me a 551 or 516 that day. i said i could wait.

i sent it in for the updated mag shelf. i doubt thats the part that has taken 3 months to make. maybe they are redesigning something? i probably should have asked while i had that guy on the phone. wasn't thinking about it - had to get back to work.

Yeah, it doesn't make sense that they were offering fixes pretty quickly before and now are holding onto the guns for months. I think they are re-doing the receiver design. If I had to guess, I'd bet you'll be getting an entirely new (steel?) lower.

Although I would agree they are probably doing a redesign, machined aluminum with a steel insert is going to be the most cost effective on the scale they are selling. All steel is going to be considerably heavier and consdierably more time consuming to machine, and stamped steel (espeically with the reather complex shape and welding involved to do a SIG lower) is going to be very difficult to be cost effective on the relatively small scale they are selling at.

But, I guess SIG could always prove me wrong.

Finally got to fire mine this weekend. I have the upgrades and still have 5 stovepipes out of 150 rounds. I will give it the benifit that maybe it needs to break in.. Last 60 rounds were flawless.. Fingers crossed. Waiting on my swiss stock hoping it shows this week!!

got it.

Gunsmith Comments:
Inspected the rifle.
Upgraded the ejection port, the sear and sear spring, the firing pin, the torsion assist, and the extractor and extractor spring.
Installed the swiss folder as a courtsey.
Test fired with no malfunctions.

just the same upgrades they were doing before correct?

i do now have a swiss folder and 2 free bulgarian mags. they sent back the orginal stock as well. now i dont know if im going to keep the swiss stock or put the UBR back on it.
